Advantages: quite funny, good make-up, great commentary
Disadvantages: none really
Idle Hands was a bit of a box office dud in the USA and only appeared on a handful of screens over here some time after. A quick region 1 release meant that I saw the film way befoer it even set foot on UK shores and to be honest I can't see why it didn't do better as it's far more entertaininng that the likes of Urban Legends:Final Cut etc. Devon Sawa plays Anton, a real slacker who spends his days watching TV , smoking pot and drinking in his parents basement along with his two friends Mick (Seth Green) and Pnub (Eldon Henson. One day he finds his hand has become possessed and has murderous tendencies that Anton can't control. Sadly he can't prevent his hand killing his two friends who return as Zombies so they can continue smoking pot and watching TV. The movie follows Anton as he tries to control his hand and get with class hottie Molly (Jessica Alba) Idle Hands is quite an amusing move with a lot of great ideas and physical comedy. Once Green and Henson return as Zombies the movie really starts going. Henson is headless and carries his had under is arm and at one stage sellotapes it back on. Sadly when he eats a borito it just seeps out of the cut. I'm laughing just thinking about it. Meanwhile Green in killed by a broken bottle and walks about with it embedded in his forehead and there's still beer swilling around it. It's well worth a rental just to see what happens to the lead singer of The Offspring. The dvd isn't bad at all for a box-office dud. The film is in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with a very solid transfer with no real signs of trouble apart from an occasional soft spot. The Region 1 also has a pan and sham version on it's flipside if you're that way inclined. Dolby Digital is the soundmix of choice and it's quite lively when there is music or when the film wants to build up some tension. It's not all bells and whistles but does the job well. Extras wi
se you get an audio commentary wit Director Rodman Flander, Seth Green and Elden Henson. All three are recorded togetehr and it's a very entertaining track. Green makes jokes about the movie tanking and at one point comments that he was very disappointed he didn't see Devon Sawa'a balls in one scene. Next is a brief 'making of' featurette that really just sells the movie but has some good footage of the guy who plays the possessed hand. He's also the man behind the hand in the Addams Family movies. Next is a deleted scene with commentary from Flender. It's actually an alternate ending that was more horror based than the comedy ending used in the final cut and is well worth seeing. A few scenes are also compared with their original storyboards and again it's well worth a look. Finally there is the usual trailer and production notes to round out the extras. This is a twisted comedy that deserved better than it got, don't just sit idle, go check it out!
