In Good Company (DVD) ... 20 June, 2005 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Nowadays it's rare to find a movie that pays attention to human weakness as well as strength, and that sees a whole person as having both. When a sports magazine gets bought by a media conglomerate, an ad sales executive named Dave Foreman (Dennis Quaid) finds himself playing second-in-command to Carter Duryea, a hotshot barely half his age (Topher Grace) whose marriage has just fallen apart. One evening Carter invites himself over to Dave's house to escape his loneliness, where he meets Dave's daughter Alex (Scarlett Johansson). The two strike immediate sparks and when they run into each other later in the city, a relationship begins--which they discreetly keep from Dave. But the heart of the movie is not in its plot, but in the way that Dave responds to the news that his wife is pregnant, or how Carter tries to fortify his self-image with a new car. These aren't jokes; the actors inhabit these moments fully and turn them into psychological events. Quaid plays Dave as a simple man, but his straightforwardness feels genuine (rather than a failure of the writer's imagination). Grace and Johansson have terrific chemistry as lovers, but so do Grace and Quaid, both as rivals and as a substitute father and son. In Good Company isn't likely to win any awards, but it's honest and honorable; there's a core of truth to its characters and their problems aren't resolved too neatly. Sometimes, that's worth watching. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

When the worlds most successful businessman (Malcolm McDowell) takes over the magazine Dan works for he finds himself demoted and the young inexperienced Carter called in from the parent company, Globecom, to replace him and run the ad sales department. The new company has different ideas about the magazine and wants their man in. IGC is all about these two guys, the older, confident family man and the young brash new guy on the block. It is about how they w...more

Crowned Review In Good Company (DVD): With me you are always..... ;o) (962 words)

In Good Company is billed as a romantic comedy, or so the press comment put on the poster says, and I’m not sure why. It certainly does have some comedy in it and a nice touch of romance as well, but a romantic comedy? Not in the traditional sense of what is considered a Rom-com anyway. I would put IGC more into the drama category than comedy; in fact it is more of a coming of age drama with touches of comedy and romance than anything else. A different kind of coming of age story as well, one where the protagonists are already past the teenage years. Hence the coming of age is more metaphorical than physical in this case. IGC is the story of two men, ...

Introduction My boyfriend and I have very different ideas about what makes an entertaining Saturday night film. I like comedy or thrillers, he likes anything that isn't funny or gory. So we picked this one up as a compromise. Described as a comedy/drama, it was directed by Paul Weitz, who also directed About a Boy. It also has three actors that I have enjoyed in previous films; Topher Grace, Dennis Quaid and Scarlett Johansson. All in all, both the boyfriend and I were entertained - it isn't the best film I have ever seen, but it was gentle and bitter sweet and left me with a smile on my face. The story Dan Foreman, a fifty-something advertising ...
