In Her Shoes (DVD) ... released 13 March, 2006 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / In Her Shoes just gets better and better as it goes along. As adapted by Erin Brockovich screenwriter Susannah Grant, this is one of those rare movies that actually improves on its source material (Jennifer Weiner's "chick lit" bestseller), with thoughtful direction by Curtis Hanson, the L.A. Confidential Oscar-winner who approaches any chosen genre with Hawksian versatility. At first it seems like Weiner's novel might yield a standard melodrama of sibling rivalry, but the polar opposition of smart, plain-looking Philadelphia lawyer Rose (the always-excellent Toni Collette) and her sexy, illiterate, irresponsible sister Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is just the starting point. In Her Shoes becomes a moving, richly developed character study that deals with painful loss, long-term guilt, negative self-image, and the discovery of a heretofore unknown grandmother named Ella (played with delicate nuance by Shirley MacLaine), whose re-entry into the sisters' lives sets the stage for the well-earned emotions of a satisfying reconciliation. As Maggie takes stock of her dismal life while staying with Ella at a Florida "retirement home for active seniors," Hanson never condescends to these likable characters, and never goes for the easy laughs in a setting that could have devolved into Cocoon-like comedy. The movie's all the more endearing for treating its male characters (played by Mark Feuerstein, Ken Howard, and Richard Burgi) with equal depth and sympathy, further enhancing a classy tearjerker that viewers of both genders can thoroughly enjoy.-- Jeff Shannon

... rather unglamourous, just looking at the cover of the DVD gives you an idea of what they are like by the way they dress. The other main character in the film is their grandmother Ella played by Shirley Maclaine who has been absent all their lives but appears and starts to change both of them on how to live their lives. This is a nice little comedy with some funny moments and also a few touching scenes as well, it is really chick lit turned into a film and I enjoyed the relative simplicity of the plot coupled with some ex...more

Premium Review In Her Shoes (DVD): If The Shoe Fits (831 words)

I just reviewed The Nanny Diaries which was a book turned film but another which was done like this a few years back was ‘In Her Shoes’. It was another book which I had been meaning to read and had literally just seemed to have heard about. Next thing I knew, I was seeing trailers for the film version so yet again I never got round to the book and ended up having to see the film version first. I don’t mind watching the films but usually I feel the book makes you use your imagination more and sometimes I miss this. The film begins with us seeing the two sisters Maggie (Cameron Diaz) and Rose (Toni Collette). Maggie has just appeared at a high school reunion and ...  Read the complete review

This is one of the best chick flicks I have seen for a long time. A heartwarming, funny, emotional tearjerker with great performances and storyline. The opening titles started with one of my favourite songs - Stupid Girl by Garbage - so I was hooked straight in! The film is based on the book by Jennifer Weiner. I haven't read this and so cannot comment on whether it is adapted well. It was directed by Curtis Hanson who also directed 8 mile and LA Confidential amongst others. It has a 12 certificate as there are some sex scenes (nothing too graphic). With a running time of 125 minutes it is a fairly long film but at a decent pace to keep the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review In Her Shoes (DVD): The shoe fits for this blockbuster (1098 words)

I have wanted to watch In Her Shoes since it's release back in 2005 but I somehow never got around to it! So I popped it onto my Amazon DVD rentals list, and forgot about it, so when it popped through my letterbox this week, I was pleasantly surprised, and looked forward to watching it. My partner and I finally got round to seeing it yesterday, and of course here is my revview of In Her Shoes. In Her Shoes is a book adaptation, which seems to be a popular trend in Hollywood at the moment, what with the adaptations of the Harry Potter franchise and The Devil Wears Prada. However, unlike these films, I have not read the book In Her Shoes by Jennifer Weiner so I ...  Read the complete review

Last year my friend and I were house sitting and got a little bored, so we took a trip down to Blockbuster and rented this film. We were so engrossed in it that we sat and watched the whole thing in silence until the end, interrupted only once by me going to the toilet. Vital Statistics: The film is directed by Curtis Hanson, who's other films include 8 Mile, The Bedroom Window, and Sweet Kill. It's genre is comedy/drama and it runs for 130 mins (2 and a quarter hours). It is rated PG-13. Plot summary: Rose Feller (Toni Collette) is a single lawyer, struggling to cope with Maggie (Cameron Diaz), her ungrateful, unemployed, ...  Read the complete review

Rose and Maggie are sisters and generally close, although their personalities are very different. Rose is a plain, hard-working lawyer who just wants to get on in life. Maggie has never held down a proper job, enjoys partying and sponges off Rose at every available opportunity. The final straw comes when Maggie sleeps with Rose's lover in retaliation for being thrown out. With nowhere else to go, Maggie decides to track down her maternal grandmother who has played little part in her grand-daughters' life so far. Rose, meanwhile, decides to make a few changes in her own life. Will the girls ever make up? And will they find out why their father wanted their grandmother out ...  Read the complete review
