Advantages: Intelligent comedy

Disadvantages: Not really memorable

It should have been a proud moment for high school English teacher Howard Brackett played by Kevin Kline when one his students who has gone on to greater things is about to receive an Academy Award and maybe mention his old teacher in his acceptance speech, the student Cameron played by Matt Dillon actually outs him in his speech when he says he provided the inspiration for the gay soldier that bought him his award.

Suddenly people around him are looking at him differently including his fiancee Emily played by Joan Cusack. Some people are not so sure however Tom Selleck is excellent as a gay reporter who suspects that Howard is really living in denial about his sexuality.

This is a well observed nicely performed comedy that I really enjoyed, it is the sort of film that you enjoy watching it while it is on but it does not really grab you enough to make you want to watch it a number of times, it has some genuinly funny and clever moments without trying to camp it up for cheap laughs and as such I found it to be a reasonably intelligent comedy and very enjoyable.

The cast are excellent and very convincing in their roles and this is one film that is worth checking out.

Summary: Good well delivered film.
