... out in an oddly retreated and reserved manner, one that we as a modern day audience are not accustom to. We know affairs and passion to play over blown in our films, surrounded by positive connotations and beautiful conclusions. In the Mood for Love however takes the perspective of simmering romances and turns it into the reality of the time period. Though the two lovers seem bound for each other for eternity they know that perhaps their love with never flourish and never be a reality, as one critic said 'The two lo...more

Crowned Review In The Mood For Love (DVD): Feeling sensual? (833 words)
by - written on 14/02/01 (Very useful, 65 readings)
Rating:

Wong Kar-Wai's latest contribution, In the Mood For Love, certainly lives up to the title, as the whole film hangs on the mood and the atmosphere that it creates. In stark contrast to Chungking Express, this is a low key film, focussing on the ordinary and the everyday, although in an extraordinary way. The first word that springs to mind when I think of this film is BEAUTIFUL. There is so much elegance, sensuality and tension, bound up within each lingering scene. Set in 1960s Hong Kong, the story concerns a central couple, Mr Chow and Mrs Chan, who move in to adjacent apartments with their respective spouses. As soon as they move in next door to ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review A visual feast (1297 words)

I first watched this film about two years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, so when I managed to get hold of a free copy with a weekend newspaper, I snatched it up. Having enjoyed it so much the first time around, I was quite surprised to find that I couldn’t really remember what happened, although I remember thinking that Maggie Cheung looked absolutely fabulous in a series of exquisitely coloured cheongsams. That pretty much sums up this film. As a story, it is very slow moving with very little action. What holds the attention is the superb acting and cinematography. The choice of patterns and colours are truly sumptuous and it is that that makes this film so ...  Read the complete review

Synopsis: A tale of two lovers never quite knowing what to do with their feelings. For any of you familiar with Wong's work you will know of his little signature moves, lighting, camera angles and character traits. All of which are place wonderfully into In the Mood for Love, a film that shows love in the proximity of tightly packed tenement houses - a film that shows the wonders and emotions of love from a third party perspective. We get to enjoy and notice every small detail of their passion and lust as they brush past each other or catch each others eye. Wong directs this with utter mastery, giving us a view on the whole relationship almost through a hidden ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Let the mood take you (724 words)

This week is cheap seat week in all cinemas in Paris. Having bought Chungking Express on video, I have been dying to see the most recent Wong Kar-wai offering, In the Mood for Love, but circumstances worked against me until now. I at last got to see it tonight for just 18F. Hurrah. Here's some background for the unfamiliar. Wong Kar-wai studied Graphics and developed an interest in Photography at Hong Kong Polytechnic. He got onto to a TV drama training scheme, and quickly went from production assistant to scriptwriter to filmwriter. His directorial debut was an acclaimed gangster movie As Tears Go By, in 1988. He followed this with Days of Being Wild ...  Read the complete review
