Advantages: Something for everyone - action, drama, science-fiction, love and even funny in parts!

Disadvantages: Goes on too long, gets too complex in parts.

'Inception' is the latest film from Director Christopher Nolan, his last being the critically-acclaimed 'The Dark Knight'. The plot involves Dominic Cobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) showcasing his unique ability to 'extract' information (usually secrets) from people as they sleep - he does this by placing himself, and the members of his team, inside their dreams using a combination of drugs and technology. This showcasing is actually an audition for Saito (Ken Watanabe). Saito explains to Cobb that he actually wants Cobb to 'incept' and idea inside someones mind rather than to extract one. Cobb and his team explains the difficulty of this due to the complex nature of how an idea forms inside a brain, but decide to take on the challenge anyway. Their target is a young, successful businessman called Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy) Saito wants Cobb and his team to 'incept' the idea of dismantling Fischer's company after his father dies in order to stop it from forming a monopoly that will put Saito out of business in the years to come.

Phew, that was difficult! 'Inception' is one of those films that is so difficult to summarise as the plot is so complex and multi-layered. I only saw it last night at the cinema and decided it would be best to review it straight away because I think if I left it for a week, I would forget the details and I probably wouldn't be able to do it justice in a review! There are also several actors/actresses in the film that I didn't even mention in the plot synopsis, most notably Sir Michael Caine, Pete Postlethwaite, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page (of 'Juno' fame) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (the young guy from '3rd Rock from the Sun') It really is an awesome cast.

I have to say, I saw a couple of adverts on the TV for this movie and thought 'looks ok but not great'. I was really blown away though. The plot is complex, but completely original. It has some of the darkness that symbolises Christopher Nolan and his films (most notably 'The Dark Knight') and there is some brilliant actions sequences that wouldn't look out of place in 'The Matrix' (the Van chase and the anti-gravity fight scenes spring to mind!) I think one of the most attractive things about this film is that there is something in it for everyone - action, love and emotions, science-fiction and drama.

The main part of the plot is the issue of dreams and I have to say it gets very confusing when the film gets into dreams within dreams and then onto dreams within dreams within dreams!!! Basically to 'incept' and idea they need to get three layers into the someones dreams. It is, in parts, ridiculously confusing. One of the other drawbacks of the film is its length - the final scenes go on a little bit too long in my book. I think they could have wrapped up the finale twenty minutes sooner without affecting the integrity of the film as a whole.

The ideas in the film are very thought-provoking and I was definitely a little uneasy when I went to sleep last night hoping that no-one was gonna try and extract any information from my brain!! I would probably give this film 4 stars because as good as it was, the length worked against it. Also, while the complexity of the plot was part of why the film worked, it was ridiculous at times. Some of the acting was 5 star though, specifically Leonardo Di Caprio in the lead role. He has showcased himself excellently in recent years in films like 'The Departed', 'Blood Diamond' and 'Revolutionary Road' and he does himself proud again. It was rumoured that Nolan initially wanted Di Caprio to play 'The Joker' and although the late Heath Ledger played that part wonderfully, it would have been great to see what the maturing Di Caprio could have done.

Great movie. Highly recommend. Considering the dirth of great movies coming out this summer, this is a must-see!!

Summary: Pop along - you will enjoy it!!
