Cobb ( Leonardo DiCaprio) is a dream extractor, who can't go back home to his children, as he is being accused of killing his wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard). They experienced the dream world together as well. The story begins with Cobb being washed ashore, and being taken to and old man after asking for him. Cobb tries to steal from the man, by breaking into the safe, and the situation appears to get worse. It turns out they are in a dream, the dreams of Saito (Ken Watanabe).
To enter someones dream, all involved have to be sedated and become part of the dream, the dreamer populates the environment with their "subconcious" the "thieves" can be detected by it if they aren't careful. The find out what the dreamer is hiding, the architect must create a safe or vault in the dream with which these secrets can be stored, the thieves can break into the safe and steal the information, secrets and ideas.
Saito realises he is in a dream within a dream, as the surroundings arent what he knows (the rug being polyester not wool) this is the fault of the "architect" the one who creates the surroundings.
Saito offers Cobb a deal, instead of extraction, he asks if inception is possible. Planting and idea into someones head rather than stealing it.
Cobb says how this is more difficult than extraction, as the origin of the idea can be traced back to them. If Cobb can pull this idea off, by incepting an idea into the head of the Son, Robert Fischer ( Cillian Murphy) of an owner of a large energy company, Maurice Fischer (Pete Poslethwaite) which stands in the way of Saito, then Saito will make it possible for Cobb to return home to his children, without being sent to prison.
This is the main plot of the film, as they try to get past the obstacles of inception.
Cobb has to convince Fischer to split his fathers empire up after his passing Maurice is very ill, and the relationship between the two is "complicated". Cobb goes to Paris to see his father, Miles ( Michael Caine) for a new architect to build the surroundings after the failings of the last one. He is introduced to a girl named Ariadne (Ellen Page) who is a student of Miles'. Cobb decides that they need to "share a dream" to show her the ropes and make her see how realistic dreams can be. She fins out that the more she alters the environment of the dream, the more aware the subconcious of the dreamer becomes aware of her presence. This is bad for extraction, or inception, as the sub concious will attack, as she finds, when Cobbs late wife Mal attacks her, and she wakes up.
In this case, 3 layers need to be created. ( A dream within a dream within a dream) In dreams time goes slower and the deeper you go the slower it goes, and the more unstable it is. Usually in dreams, if you are killed, you wake up back to reality. However, to gain 3 layers in a dream a strong sedative has to be given, chosen by Yusuf (Dileep Rao), if killed you slip into t a dream limbo, a "unstrucutred" dream, where your mind is lost. Ariadne is told to make a "totem", which is an object that they know the movement of and understand well, this helps them keep a grasp of what is dream and what is reality.
Cobb has a spinner as his, from his wife.
The team consists of:
Eames- ( Tom Hardy) an impersonator, he will play a role in planting the idea into Rober Fischers head, by pretending to be Roberts God Father Peter Browning ( Tom Berenger).
Arthur- Cobbs best friend. He will stay in the second layer and provide the kick that will end the dream and bring them back into the first layer.
Saito- demands to come with them to ensure the job is done
Yusuf- Stays in the first layer of the dream, drives the rest of the team in dream state and provides the kick which will wake them into reality.
They realise something they didn't account for when they enter Fischers dream, that his subconscious would be ready for them. This twist gave another dimension to an already complex story, but only added to benefit the film and didn't over complicate at all.
The whole time of the mission, Cobb is trying to fight back Mal entering the dream, a secret he has kept from the rest of the team. But will Mal go to sabotage the mission, again? And why is she there in the first place?
Ariadne has seen Mal before, and has suspicions before the mission, she doesn't trust that Cobb can keep her out, and is worried that this will ruin the Inception.
The dilemma from the start ruins the syncronisation of the layers of the dreams so the "kick" that has to occur simultaneously to wake them all up doesn't happen, so they have to improvise.
Saito is nearly lost into Dream Limbo. Cobb decides to find him with Ariadne into a 4th layer of the dream, the world that Mal and Cobb created together. But Mal manifests in Cobbs sub consious to possibly ruin things again.
Ariadne finds out the truth about Mal, and why she died, and Leonardo has the make a choice between dream and reality.
I don't want to be too detailed about the rest of the film as you can see, as i feel that you have to sit and work through it yourself, without any assistance. The experience is alot more interesting and makes you appreciate the complexity of the storyline alot more if you have to understand it yourself.
I brought this film for £7 from Tesco, i wanted to buy it on DVD for my first watch, incase i had to see it again to understand. I have to say, this is ne of my favorite films so far, considering how many twists and turns were in the film, i feel they were placed brilliantly, and no loophole was left to chance. You find yourself finding an answer for every odd part of the film, and feel that the effort in story telling was there along with thr special effects. This film doesn't rely on CGI etc. alone, it has an amazing story to back it up, the effects just make it oh so much more exhilerating.
The acting was brilliant, there seemed to be a focus on the back story of Cobb, but didnt' ask any questions about any of the other characters. This was great, as it let us focus on the mission at hand, and made sure that we weren't bogged down with everyones "personal issues".
This was the mission of one man to se ehis children and he wasn;t going to let anything get in his way.
5 stars from me, great film
Summary: Complex plot, with special effects to boot. Amazing, a must watch!
