Just a couple days before the July 4th the day americans call their Independence Day, a massive unidentified spacecraft is detected entering Earth orbit. The world holds it's collective breath, as in a majestic display of raw power the Mothership offloads a fleet of enemy spacecrafts which assume intimidating position over every major city on Earth. No communication is forthcoming. In the New York office of a television broadcaster technical whiz David Levinson has a funny feeling that he knows exactly what the aliens have come for and what they are going to do. He has figured out there plan in which has disrupting worldwide communications since the alien arrival. Hidden in normal signals from our own communication satellites is a foreign transmission, and it is counting down.

Meanwhile Captain Steven Hiller of the US Airforce wake up one morning to find out that the world had been invaded by alien spacecrafts. Whitehouse the President wonders with his advisors just what to do about this momentous event . Racing to Washington with his father, David knows the clock is ticking down and the only way to get intouch or face to face with the president is through contacting his estranged wife, who happens to be one of his top advisors working for the president. With minutes to spare David gets into the Whitehouse and explains his theory. Luckily he is a persuasive sort of person, and the President orders an immediate evacuation. As Air force One clears the runway, the countdown hits zero and all of the alien spacecraft (one of which is positioned directly over the Whitehouse) start to open up to unleash their deadly weapons all around the world. City after city including Washington and New York are literally wiped out will little survivers left.
