Advantages: Weird and beautiful

Disadvantages: Totally incoherent

I thought I would be the only person to like this movie, but the connoiseur Silent Bob has beaten me to it. Anyway, I would like to add my voice to the small band of people willing to love 'Inferno' in public. Even friends who like Argento movies hate this, and I saw it at an all-night horror show where it was unwisely sandwiched in between 'Near Dark' and 'Night of the Living Dead', two dead straight horror movies.

Even its predecessor, 'Suspiria', is still a conventional horror movie despite being different to Argento's operatic thrillers, but 'Inferno' is the horror genre recast as an objet d'art.

It makes no sense, except as a catalogue of the growing influence of a supernatural force across the world. There is some rough dubbing, and it is in no way as scary as any of his previous movies, being rather unnerving and creepy instead.

Nevertheless, the use of colour and atmosphere is matchless - there's a superb sequence where Mark sees one of the three mothers at a music rehearsal, and the opening is just weirdness incarnate.

The audience in my showing shouted abuse at the screen, but I was carried away by how deliberately bonkers it was. Open your mind, seek it out, and enjoy the last great film of the Maestro.

Silent Bob - 18.09.00

Deep Red uncut DVd is very good though apprently some players had problems playing it avoid the region 2 release of Suspiria only buy the region 1 release. In the new Total DVD magazine Deep Red gets 10/10 for film and an 8 overall.
