Inspector Gadget (DVD) ... DVD released 22 January, 2001 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL / Strictly for kids, this 1999 live-action feature version of the popular cartoon series seems long even at 80 minutes. As a video, it's easier to take and appreciate for what works best in the story: the special effects. Matthew Broderick plays the security guard who is physically transformed into a multi-use cyborg with a zillion attachments, from stilts to helicopter blades to skis. A crime fighter in raincoat and fedora, and equipped with a nifty Gadgetmobile, the hero investigates the death of a man linked to the villainous Sanford Scolex (Rupert Everett). Scolex, who blames Gadget for having to wear a prosthetic hand, develops an evil robot twin of the good inspector, causing much mischief and giving Broderick an opportunity to poke fun at his own performance of the virtuous Inspector. The action is shaky, the script plods along and the effects soon take over; Everett has to go to the extremes of overacting just to be seen above it. But children of a certain age will almost certainly engage with the more clever stuff and forgive the rest. --Tom Keogh

But to my surprise again, the film ended, after a mere seventy five minutes (and five minutes of that was credits, as well as little CGI inserts added every now and again to try and beef out the film). I didn't like the fact that the talking car comments that's their in a Disney Movie. I know I'm watching a movie, I don't need the characters in it telling me. Claw's (who seem seemed to lose his Doctor's title for the sake of the film) hand was crushed by a bowling ball, tha...more

Premium Review Inspector Gadget (DVD): Poor mans Robocop, anyone? (578 words)
by - written on 14/10/08 (Very useful, 6 readings)
Rating:

The "dream" start lets you know what your in for and seeing a pigtailed Michelle Trachtenberg lets you know we're staying in the teen demographic. Right, firstly. Claw's hand is not anywhere near where the bowling ball lands so it clearly is seen to be behind the bowling ball that "crushes" it. The "goof" that Gadget is covered in wires when he leaves the operating room. He'd just fired a rocket from his foot and it shot all over the room, that's why he's covered in wires. The little CGI inserts between scenes. Makes me get the feeling they couldn't write a script long enough to make a full motion picture. I really didn't like the ...  Read the complete review

Dur-dedur -dedur-INN-SPEK-TAH-GAD-JITT-dur-dedur-dedur-DUH-DUH!!! Robin Williams' excruciatingly awful Popeye was probably the last time anyone really tried to bring a cartoon strip faithfully to life on the screens without any pretence of transforming it into real life, i.e. almost Dick Tracy-like bug eyed gaudy technicolour and gumball headcaseness, but this time they did it with more style and elan and all round comic sensibility, such that the only thing that was missing from the original cartoon strip was the manic sticky out hair of Matthew Broderick's original role model. Inspector Gadget is a real piece of bizarre cartoon work made ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Inspector Gadget (DVD): Go Go Gadget ... (834 words)

As we all know, Inspector Gadget was a hit kids TV show some years ago. We all watched it, we all loved it (or at least I did), and eventually some years later Disney Studios made the film. Starring Matthew Broderick as Inspector Gadget, we see the story of how he become 'Gadget' from an ordinary human. For most film companies it would be hard to transform this TV show into a box office hit, but to Disney it was just a matter of course. And they did well. This TV to film conversion is probably one of the best that I have seen. The story starts by looking at the life of John Brown (or Jack, or something like that), who is a security guard for a company ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Good special effects, weak story (291 words)

Rating:

Children and adults alike are decidedly ill served by "Inspector Gadget," a frenetic but genuinely mirthless live action take on the popular Saturday morning cartoon series that mires poor Matthew Broderick in the role of a nerdish do-gooder who gets the chance to live out his heroic fantasies when he is converted into a one-man, self-contained crime fighting cybernetic arsenal. Thanks to current state-of-the-art special effects, the filmmakers manage to effectively translate the cartoonish aspects of the original to the live action format. Despite a few glaringly bad shots utilizing rear screen projection, the visuals that help to realize the infinite ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Inspector Gadget (DVD): Better On The Second Watching, But Still Not Great. (610 words)

Inspector Gadget was released in 1999 and is based on the cartoon of the same title. It was directed by David Kellogg and stars Matthew Broderick as Inspector Gadget, and Michelle Trachtenberg as Penny. Also making an appearance are Joely Fisher, Dabney Coleman, Michael G. Hagerty and Rupert Everett. The film follows a man (John Brown soon to become Gadget) who has an accident while attempting to stop someone who has just killed Dr Brenda Bradford's father and stole his work. When he wakes up, he finds that his body has been repaired by an array of gadgets, thanks to Dr.Bradford, who has made him into a robotic crime fighting man-machine.
