Advantages: Not a cartoon
Disadvantages: Major Flaws
I found this movie to be very good when I first watched it but that was probably because I was a small child of five or six. After watching this movie again I regrettably have to say it is terrible and that Matthew Broderick was a horrible acting choice. I still love the TV series that this was based on and have to say that Don Adams was by far a much greater actor. In this movie Gadget is not really a bumbling idiot who knows nothing like in the cartoons as he instantly knows that this person is a mad agent and so is that guy over there were as in the cartoon he would never be able to tell even when his mission was over. Penny and Brain either had a very small part in this movie or they were not in it at all as I can't recall anything about them which is a disappointment from the cartoon. Rupert Everett is not a bad actor in this but he just does not look anything like you would expect Dr Claw to look like as I know other people have said he just does not look like the evil genius you would expect to have claws for instance no scars on his face or missing eyes etc and I know I missed the husky and deep voice Dr Claw had in the cartoon. Gadget's chief in this movie if I remember correctly is not very nice toward him while in the cartoon he always respected him and trusted him even though he blew him up with the letters. I don't even remember there being exploding letters in this movie which is another disappointment. The movie takes place slightly before the series it seems as gadget is a security guard who gets injured and turned into a cyberhuman to save his life which sounds like the robocop story a bit as I believe someone else mentioned. Dr Claws cat is not even the same colour as the cartoon which was black and white as in this movie it is pure white. If I remember correctly in this movie Gadget sees Claws face yet in the cartoon he had never seem him before in his life and can't even tell who he is from his voice. All in all this movie is a disappointment for any Gadget fan and the only way you will ever get the slightest non cartoon version of Inspector Gadget is to watch Don Adams in Get Smart were he is an idiot as well. The gadget mobile is a extremely weird compared to the cartoon as it has unbelievable upgrades such as the ability to talk or control itself which I feel is annoying as the original car was much better. As the movie is rated U you would expect jokes that young children would understand but some apear rather rude for a U such as a woman bending over and Gadget starts making monkey noises or when he grabs a doctors .... The movies story is all about a robotic foot being stolen and the creators father getting killed in the process leading to Gadget dying and being rebuilt then vowing to kill the murderers. During the movie Dr Claw creates two more robots such as another Gadget and another version of the inventor for himself. A big flaw in this movie is Penny appears to be in the age of twelve to fifteen when she was only about seven in the original cartoon. The dog is also a completely different breed from the type in the cartoon as they used a small jack russel I think it is instead of the likes of a Labrador.
Summary: Disappointing
