Iron Eagle (DVD) ... definitive boys' movie of the 1980s. An 18-year-old (Jason Gedrick) gets instruction from an old vet (Louis Gossett Jr) in how to fly an F-16 jet and kick butt in the Middle East, all while listening to his Walkman and--oh, yeah--saving his father from terrorist clutches. Gossett wears his tough-love face while the kids run rampant. Speaking of children, young guys must have like this comic-book movie, as its success spawned three sequels. But watch out for the Reagan-era jingoism and political reductiveness. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

... But it is a great classic. Albeit a great, cheesy classic. As I am interested in all aspects of military portrayal, I thought this would be an amazing & interesting comparison. My god how wrong could I be?!? Lets study the differences. TOP GUN is a cult classic film. Showing young men (butch, studly & buffed of course) in an exciting flying action flick. IRON EAGLE is a limp wannabe making a mockery of any air force. It also perpetrates a 14 year old fly boy flying an F16, not to mention his pre-pubescent ...more

Welcome to the 1980's. Snake Belts, 'Skill', crappy roller skates, white dog poo in parks, and the best decade for films ever. You can't doubt me; the evidence is there: Terminator, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future, Beverly Hills Cop, Batman, Die hard, Top Gun. Case closed your honour. No further evidence. Lets look at that last entry: Top Gun. Released in 1985. It could have been a recruitment video for the US Navy, it was a seriously cool movie. I can imagine in a boardroom in one of the big film producing company a conversation between executives would have gone along the lines of "But hold on; is that a ...  Read the complete review

I was so pleased to recently find this film in Virgin for £5.99. My fiance has gone on about this film ever since we met. It was one of the classic films he grew up on and he had very fond memories of it. I attempted to get it for him for christmas after using WHSmith's ever so reliable ordering system, whereby you have to pay in advance and they hope you forget all about it!! So I am sure you can picture the look on his face when he got it - very happy!! Anyway I had never seen this film before and I snuggled up with my fiance expecting to be a little bored and disappointed - and was quite surprised that I wasn't. The film was released in 1986 and was ...  Read the complete review

Iron Eagle (DVD): Not bad.... (121 words)

This is the first of the four Iron Eagle movies and by far and away was the best one.... The basic storyline is that the guys father was shot down by rogue Migs, so Doug and Chappy(!!) steal two planes and go on a avenging mission to rescue his father. The film's story is extremely typical but....it's actually been made quite well. Louis Gossett Jr plays the part very well, and provides at least an element of quality for the film. The action is good throughout, if a little over played... The story is lacking in places, and the whole thing is really cheesy. However, at the time it was a good film, and very watchable. ...  Read the complete review

The first of the Iron Eagle trilogy of films, and indeed it starts a trend that deserves to be continued in the sequels. Jason Gedrick plays a young boy who's father (a fighter pilot) is captured in the Middle East. Jason mounts a rescue mission aided by his young friends and a retired Air Force colonel, played by the incredibly talented and versatile Louis Gosset jr. Despite having a teenager in the starring role, this is not a movie aimed at a tenage audience, but rather it is aimed at a general audience and is a great movie for anyone who enjoys action combined with a storyline. A rare combination these days. If it comes around on V again ...  Read the complete review
