Iron Man (Iron Man (DVD))

Advantages: Downey Jr., his suit and the action scenes that come with it Disadvantages: The final battle which should have been epic FOR ONCE there is a superhero who is not driven by dignity, honour, or good-will. His attitude is more than brilliant and is such a refreshing change from so many of the clichéd, sensitive guys. Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. is a multi-millionaire who develops weapons systems and sells them to the U.S. government. After getting captured in a foreign country and seeing his loyal, helpful cell-mate die, this triggers him to become something else, to change and to make a helpful difference around the world. He builds a rustier, less slick version of the original "Iron Man" suit and escapes. Back in the U.S. he completes the perfect design. There are enemies who challenege him, but with the suit, it seems he has nothing to worry about. Downey Jr. plays his part perfectly. Although he does have the revelation to change his selfish, arrogant characteristics, they still remain, providing excellent humour throughout the film. The film deals with how his character came about, as well as developing that into something further and Downey Jr. is definitely the man for that. The action scenes provide tons of entertainment, althought the final showdown with the main badguy is a tad disappointing. The final scene nicely sets up a sequel, which really would not be the worst thing. Summary: A successful launch of yet another superhero franchise - this is something that will certainly last |
