Advantages: Downey's performances
Disadvantages: Not wildly original
Iron Man doesn't have the same profile as other superheroes, and to be honest i didn't know too much about him before i saw this film. In some ways that could have been a blessing, as i found myself more engrossed not knowing too much of the background.
The film follows the standard premise of superhero films, of an ordinary guy (but a genuis in this case!) transforming himself to became the ultimate fighter against evil. The baddies of choice for this decade (middle east and large companies) are all present and correct with one notable character (won't spoil it for you) presenting the twist. This is not a criticism of the film, just merely stating that it doesn't stray far from the normal superhero film formula.
What does give this film a freshness and exuberance is the performance of Robert Downey Jr who infuses his character with real charm and depth. He has a wonderful presence on screen, and as his first forray into blockbuster territory, its great to see such a skilled actor bringing a real zest to his work, rather than going through the motions for a big paycheck.
Good support is provided from Jeff Bridges (as far away from the Dude character in Big Lebowski as you can imagine!) and Gwyneth Paltrow is perfectly fine, and apparently her attraction to the film was the opportunity to work with Downey Jr.
There's plenty of action sequences to keep your average blockbuster fan happy, and the plot is enjoyable if a little predictable. Its worth seeing, just to prove than superhero films can be made with real charm and humor and not just as a money making franchise.
Summary: Good solid superhero film, with real charm from Downey Jr
