Advantages: Lots of satisfying Iron Man action

Disadvantages: Something missing

Having watched the disappointing Incredible Hulk film recently, I was really hoping that at least this would live up to it's potential. Thankfully it does. I absolutely love blockbusters and superhero films so this was right up my street. I'll be honest though, as much as I was looking forward to this film, I was very skeptical of the cast - none of which am I fond of (Jeff Bridges in particular). But as many have already said, Robert Downey Jr. played Tony Stark excellently and was perfectly cast for the part as the playboy billionaire and Jeff Bridges was also excellent thankfully. I have to say though, despite her general performance being spot-on, I found Gywneth Paltrow a bit tame when it came to the action. Not a big complaint, but something that slightly niggled. Overall, the film was brilliant and delivered lots of action, top special effects, great characters and just the right amount of humour which hit the mark everytime (something the hulk film failed miserably on). It offers everything a fan of Iron Man could want really and it's a very well-made and great quality movie. Strangely though, despite all my praise I actually would only give it 4.5 stars. Or maybe 4.8. The reason? Well to tell the truth I'm not really sure. I mean personally I would've liked it if there had been more combat action. Sure there is a lot of actiony stuff - and that's great, but I did want more fighting. And I appreciate that as this was the origin story of Iron Man they had to fit all of the Tony Stark becoming the Iron Man stuff in it. I expect the sequel (which I'm really looking forward to) will have more action in it, now that they've got past the origin story. But don't forget Batman Begins - that was an origin movie aswell, and that had much more fighting in it than this. Really though, that's not the reason I'd only give it 4.5 stars. What it does, it does very well and is highly entertaining. But something I can't really put my finger on stopped me from giving it the full 5. Which is unlike me for this sort of movie. Brilliant as it is, there are a lot of films I like more - films that gripped me a lot more and excite me more when I think back about them. Films I'm much more eager to re-watch. Not sure why, but I don't feel that way about Iron Man. So for that reason, I give it 4.5 stars.

Summary: Still highly recommended - blockbuster fans should buy it!
