It's Complicated (DVD)
Advantages: Funny, heartwarming, good cast, some good songs
Disadvantages: Nothing for me but not everyone's cup of tea if you don't like rom coms
It's Complicated is a 2010 romantic comedy staring Meryl Streep (Jane), Steve Martin (Adam) and Alec Baldwin (Jake).
I first watched this on my sister in law's recommendation as she told me it was absolutely hilarious and as I do quite like a good rom com I needed very little persuading to be honest.
=== The plot ===
The story focuses on the life of Jane. She has been divorced for the last ten years, she is still single but is finally feeling comfortable with her life. She has good friends, she is developing her house just like she always wanted, her kids have grown up to be people she can be proud of, but as the youngest moves out to go to college, it seems that a bit of loneliness might start to creep in. However, loneliness is not Jane's fate here and her life suddenly gets more exciting and unpredictable than it has been for a long time! On a trip to New York for her son's graduation she ends up getting drunk and reminiscing with her ex husband. One thing leads to another and they end up having an affair. While all this is going on, another love interest comes onto the scene and Jane finds that even when more mature in years, relationships can still end up getting very complicated!
I found it quite refreshing to have a rom com with older people rather than the typical stories about people in their 20s and 30s. This does mean there is more chance for a complicated back story, baggage and issues which younger couples don't have, so it was a bit different.
=== The characters ===
I really like the characters in this film. I love Meryl Streep and think she is a great actress. I am sure most people agree with me, although discussing this film with my sister just now on email she wrote "i didnt know ur a streep lover, u have gone down in my estimation"! LOL - so obviously there are some out there who don't like her! Anyway, Streep does play the character of Jane well and convincingly. There is a lot of humour and some parts had me laughing out loud, but she always has some deeper emotion and vulnerability to her character. I think she comes across very believeably in her relationship to her three children in the film and you can see her insecurity when getting physical again with her ex after 10 years and wondering what he will think, although this brings a lot of opportunities for humour!
Alec Baldwin's character Jake is really funny as he is quite over the top and full of bravado and tries to be charming. I think he seems quite a caracature but he does it in quite a loveable way even though he is a bit slimy, so I did find myself rooting for them to get back together. He is pretty much the opposite of the other love interest played by Steve Martin. In general I am not really a big fan of Steve Martin as there is just something about him that doesn't appeal (don't know why) but I did find his character grew on me throughout and I started to warm to him.
The characters of the children are quite good too, but the best is definitely the older daughter's fiance Harley who is played by John Krasinski, who is better known as Jim in the American version of the series The Office. He has such a comedy face at times and there are some scenes in here which really cracked me up when Harley accidentally found himself in the middle of some awkward situations.
I would definitely say it has a good cast and likeable characters.
=== Suitability ===
This is rated 15 and states "contains moderate drug use and moderate sex references".
=== Soundtrack ===
The film has an enjoyable soundtrack, which is quite laid back and includes some older songs such as Wouldn't It Be Nice by the Beach Boys, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing by Leo Sayer, Don't Do Me Like That by Tom Petty. It has a feel good atmosphere to it.
=== DVD ===
The run time is 1 hour 55 minutes and there is an extra 21 minutes of bonus material. I have not watched this material, but it includes a "making of" feature and a commentary.
Subtitles are available on the DVD.
=== Overall ===
I really enjoyed this film and I found it hilarious in parts but it is also sweet and heartwarming. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the rom com genre, any fans of Meryl Streep or anyone who wants some light entertainment as long as they are not offended by some sex jokes.
Summary: Meryl pulls off the role as a rom com leading lady
