Whilst sat watching the adverts on the TV I heard the song "Stars" by Simply Red which always makes me think of one of my favourite girlie films, Jack and Sarah and decided to force my other half into watching it as I wanted to watch something different. The film is based on Jack (Richard E Grant) a Lawyer who is married to his lovely wife Sarah (Imogen Stubbs) and when we meet the couple it is clear that they are to be parents shortly, they are living in a house which has still not been completed by the builders and Jack has to cope with the tramp that lives in his skip, his snobbery at the beginning of the film is so typically British where he ... Hi. My name is Morgie and I like 'chick flicks'. But ya know something? I don't care what you all think, coz I love this film! There I said it. Yes, this is (as far as I'm concerned) a 'chick flick', and I don't care who knows that I watch it maybe a little more often than I should. *Morgie takes a deep breath, relieved to have finally admitted her terrible affliction* Okay, I think I can carry on. Where was I? Oh, I remember now. I was gonna tell you about the film. Well, it's a romantic comedy type thingamajig, but with some real heartache and tears and stuff. Really. But don't let this terrible ... Read the complete review

The only reason I had a watch of Jack and Sarah was the constant comments I kept reading about how Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl was little more than a remake of it. While there are certainly some similar plot points, on the whole though I would say that the two are entirely different. The best part though was finding a nice little film that I probably would have missed otherwise. Walking the line between drama and comedy is not an easy one for any film. If you're trying to push serious themes, it becomes difficult to crack jokes at the same time. Likewise, a dramatic event in a comedic film can ... Read the complete review

Apologies to Delia Smith, whose writing style I am ruthlessly parodying (well, I'm trying to!) JACK AND SARAH This is a very fast and an easy recipe to make. 1 Richard E Grant - no fancy variety, just the standard Yuppy brand 1 Samantha Mathis - or any standard piece of American Fluff 1 Judi Dench - Neurotic & opinionated if at all possible 1 Eileen Atkins - A sensitive sprinkle 1 Ian McKellan - Preferably marinated in several bottles of the cheapest alcohol 1 David Swift - A good dollop if you can manage it, but this recipe tends to underuse it somewhat 1 Imogen Stubbs- Just a dash at ... Being a heterosexual man, I suppose I could lose a lot of street-cred by liking this film (if I have any) but it has to go down as one of my all-time favourites. Slotting loosely into the RomCom genre, it is actually a tale of one man's struggle to raise a child in the wake of his wife's untimely death and it is heart-wrenching almost to the point of being depressing to start with. The man in question is the eponymous Jack (played by Richard E Grant) who has a successful job in a city law firm and, along with his heavily pregnant wife, Sarah (Imogen Stubbs), is busy managing the renovation of their new home. Shortly after moving in, Sarah goes into ... Read the complete review
