Advantages: Used to be funny

Disadvantages: Sell out for money

I remember watching Jackass on MTV when it was first shown in 2000, and thinking how amusing and how different it was. Over the years, it has become less amusing as the jokes and pranks become more repetitive, so when I heard that the gang were releasing 'Jackass - The Movie', I wondered if they were going to try and give the film a plot, and if so how were they going to manage it. For those of you who have not witnessed the antics of the Jackass crew, I will try to enlighten you a little. A group of friends, led by Johnny Knoxville, play out pranks, dares and other childish stunts akin to witnessing a young child stick their hand in a socket because they know no better, and with each stunt, they try to outdo each other and push themselves to the limits of acceptability. These men are either stupid, extremely bored, or desperate for fame no matter what the price. We all know that we should not laugh at what they do, in the same way we shouldn't laugh at other people's misfortune on 'You've Been Framed', but sometimes we just can't help it.

Within the first few minutes of watching the film, my question about the plot was answered simply.....there is not one. This film is basically an extended version of the MTV programme, which runs at just over 80 minutes. The gang claim it is full of stuff they could not show on TV but I have to wonder why, as there is certainly nothing that new.

The most notable members of the group are Johnny Knoxville - Self proclaimed leader. Wee Man - No surprises here...he is a very small man who is frequently the butt of jokes. Preston Lacey - An overweight softy whose favourite activity seems to be chasing Wee Man around various cities whilst only wearing a baggy pair of white Y fronts. Bam Maguera - His sole purpose seems to be wreaking as much havoc upon his parents as he can, and they have become as famous as him. In one scene of the film, he sets off a large amount of fireworks in their
bedroom in the middle of the night!! Why would you??? Steve O - After Knoxville, probably the most well known, and probably maddest member of the gang. Chris Pontius (aka Party Boy) - Most famous (within Jackass circles) for stripping off in front of strangers whilst dancing to some strange music!!! There are others, but I would never dream of boring you with the list of their names! They even manage to persuade bona fide professionals such as film director Spike Jonze and skateboarder Tony Hawk to join in their fun!

There are many stunts and antics shown, and I certainly would not want to spoil your fun by covering them all, but needless to say this film is not politically correct, and it is awash with toilet humour and cheap gags about bodily functions. They so stupid things like give each other paper cuts in between their fingers and toes, which my wife found pretty hard to watch. I just found it pretty boring, and I felt like I had seen it all before, and it was much funnier the first time I saw it. If you have never seen the TV programme, and your sense of humour is a little warped, then I am confident this will entertain you for a short while, but in the main, it is just a cheap attempt to cash in on the success of the TV programme, with little thought or effort to entertain the viewer.

It really isn't a film, and there is little content to write about, so it is hard to critique this offering. I laughed a little, was bored a lot, and generally felt quite disappointed when the end credits rolled. I didn't think I had any expectations when I rented the film, but I obviously did, and thought it was going to have a plotline somewhere in amongst the mayhem......I was wrong! It used to feel like a breath of fresh air, but now it seems stale, repetitive and really uninventive. It's rated 18, and I think that is suitable considering some of the sights which are on view, and some of the ideas that the gang decide to put into practice, al
though I can't really see it appealing to many people much over that age either!

I thought this was quite funny the first time but the joke wears off soon enough!
