Advantages: Some excellent big stars
Disadvantages: They are wasted!
There are some very famous names behind this remake of the old Rat Pack movie with the same name, but it is a shame that they are not put to better use. The cast list is to die for - George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Elliott Gould (we don't see nearly enough of him on the big screen these days), and many others too, not to mention the director Steven SOderbergh. But despite all of these 'star' names, there is still something lacking - and that is heart. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed the film very much. What is on the screen looks great. Indeed, Las Vegas looks better than I've seen it on screen in a long while (although nothing will ever match either VIVA LAS VEGAS with Elvis, or Scorsese's CASINO of course), and of course the big stars look great on the screen, but it all seems a little too false. The story involves ex-con Clooney getting a gang together to steal $150 million from 3 Las Vegas casinos on the night of Lennox Lewis' heavyweight championship fight at the MGM Grand. I won't spoil it by telling you whether or not they achieve their aim, but I must say that by the time the heist actually came along, I didn't really care too much. So, see the film if you want to see all of those big names together, but not if you want to see a film with a heart!

- 23/03/02 Despite the reviews I thought this film was a little shallow. Sort of thinking it was clever but coming off as a rehash of a dozen other movies. A big dissappointment. |
