Jaws 2 (DVD)

Jaws 2 (DVD) ... Lorraine Gary ... / DVD released 30 July, 2001 at Universal Pictures UK / Features of the DVD: PAL / Judged entirely on its own merits, Jaws 2 isn't a bad film. It even has some passably scary moments (Brody discovering a charred body in the waves; the swimming boy racing the shark back to his dinghy). But it's absolutely impossible to judge this movie on its own merits. Despite being given a great big Panavision camera to play with director Jeannot Szwarc can't hide his TV-movie origins, nor can the script, both of which spend far too long landlocked with the bickering inhabitants of Amity Island. Where the original film boldly set out to sea with Robert Shaw's Ahab-like Quint, in a misplaced desire to attract a teenage audience this movie dwells at interminable length on the courting rituals of the local youth; where Spielberg's original is a masterpiece of pacing and carefully timed tension-building, Jaws 2 sags terribly whenever the plastic shark swims out of sight. Roy Scheider comes off best, reprising his role as Chief Brody, while Lorraine Gary's role as his wife is expanded (she must be a glutton for punishment: she also starred in Jaws 4: The Revenge). Taken as a sequel Jaws 2 is inferior in every way; taken as an unassuming TV movie it's a respectable, workmanlike effort; but looking forward at what was to follow, it begins to look like a minor masterpiece. --Mark Walker

Scheider once again shows himself competent at a brooding harbinger role, although a little less effectively as the 'hero'. None of the kids are worthy of a mention, and it's not suprising that none of them have gone on to have spectacular careers. Crowned Review Jaws 2 (DVD): Back for seconds! (1856 words)

After the smash-success of Jaws, it was really impossible for there not to be a sequel, and just as the first movie became one of the most influential monster movies of all time, Jaws 2 would become the stencil-applied to a thousand Horror-sequels, and is often credited as actually instigating a number of elements that would later become synonymous with the slasher sub-genre. Now, its a popular viewpoint that all of the Jaws sequels were rubbish, something that the two movies which follow this one wholeheartedly enforce, however, while it may not match up to it's predecessor(but then, what does?), Jaws 2 isn't by any stretch of the imagination a bad picture, ...  Read the complete review

Plot: Another great white is terrorising Amity Island. Once again, several people are taken from the water, this time though the island does nothing, firing the police chief for causing a panic. A group of the towns children then go on a sailing trip and are relentlessly pursued and harrassed by the shark until the Chief can come and save the day... Premium Review Jaws 2 (DVD): Blunter Teeth and Smaller Jaws (752 words)

Hollywood only need to break even to suggest a sequel and a trilogy and an eighth instalment, so its no surprise that when one of its films became a ground breaking hit they would follow it up with a sequel. With the original Jaws already one of the most successful box office hits of its time, this hit sequel followed 3 years later. Like its predecessor, it broke records and became the most successful box office sequel to date. Without revealing its timeline, Jaws 2 takes up a while after the original film. It opens with a pair of photographers diving into the waters of Amity Island and taking photographs of the original film's now-famous Orca boat, which ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Jaws 2, just when you thought it was safe! (1084 words)

I absolutely love all the Jaws films, but I have to say that Jaws 2 is the best one in my opinion. The first Jaws was a fantastic start, but I did feel the second one had the edge slightly. The third was slightly over the top and the shark looked so mechanical it was ridiculous. I have to say that the last one in my view didn't belong with the previous three it was totally unbelievable, not the same based in Amity and without good old chief Brody. Jaws 2 was released in 1978 just three years after Jaws and was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. The original was directed by the world famous Steven Spielberg! As I said previously I am in favour of the ...  Read the complete review

'Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...' Spielberg once said that sequels were 'a cheap carny trick'. That was on the eve of Jaws 2, a film he cleverly turned down the option of directing. It's a bit ironic really as Spielberg ended up directing many sequels with the worst being 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2'. Spielberg would bypass the Jaws franchise, but others just couldn't help themselves. Both Scheider and Gary return as do a number of other Amity locals to this: Jaws 2 - The Big Cash-In. The first Jaws film was a major success, heralding the start of the summer blockbuster. Jaws 2 was also another big event film, ...  Read the complete review
