Advantages: Excellent film
Disadvantages: Makes you think twice about going for a swim off the beach
The score by John Williams particularly when the shark is in or almost in view makes the film. 25 years on the music still haunts me. When I saw Jaws for the first time the great white shark looked very real to me and I've seen a few real one's in my time. Later viewing showed up the flaws but that didn't detract from the terror of the tale. The quality of the story, the filming and the acting more than made up for a shark which was obviously fake. The story is simple in itself as a great white shark takes it upon itself to use the surfers and bathers of a holiday town as snacks. With the holiday season fast approaching the town mayor is reluctant to believe the scare stories of a monster shark because it will cost the townspeople dearly in terms of lost holiday maker's revenue. Even in films the god of money rules. A beach party to convince the resident and visitors alike that there is no problem doesn't quite go to plan when you know who puts in an appearance. You could almost taste the salty spray as the bathers splash their way to the safety of the beach. Next time that you are up to your waist in water try and run. People sat on the couch watching the film would suddenly lift their legs clear of the floor and tuck them up under their bodies, just in case "it" had learned to walk. That's the sort of effect the film had. It frightened, but then it was meant to.
