Advantages: Great star studded cast. Great Plot. Hilarious

Disadvantages: None This movies is brilliant

During the days when I was back at College we used to get free periods are what others probably now know as slacking off time. Anyway it was one of these free periods that me and several of my friends decided we may as well go to the cinema and catch a movie. At the time if I recall correctly there was not too much to choose from. I think Lake Placid and Hannibal were both showing and I will admit I opted for Lake Placid. Jay and Silent Bob got the casting votes however and to be fair I didn't even know what or who Jay and Silent Bob was but that got the vote so I had to suck it up.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was released in November 2001 and hit stores on DVD in 2008. It has an 18 rated certificate which is well justified believe me, and has a run time of 104 minutes. It's advertised as being a comedy but if ever the use of profanity reaches its maximum then this is the film. The film was written and directed by Kevin Smith who also played the character of Silent Bob. Smith has written other movies such as Mall Rats and Chasing Amy. In most of Smith's movies he often appears as Silent Bob along with his fellow friend Jay (Jason Mewes). This was the first film however to focus on Jay and Silent Bob as the lead roles.

The Plot Outline.

The film revolves around two teenage stoners named Jay and Silent Bob. Basically their day to day lives include hanging outside the kwik-e-mart selling weed. Jay see's himself as the leader of the two and the fact that Silent Bob is called Silent Bob due to the fact that he never speaks doesn't give him much of a case to argue with him. After Jay and Silent Bob are slapped with a restraining order they visit their old friend Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) who tells them that Miramax have bought the rights to make a movie based on a comic that Jay and Silent Bob created entitled 'Bluntman and Kronic'. McNeil mentions that both Jay and Silent Bob are entitled to some of the profits from the movie, however Jay and Silent Bob are more determined in getting back at all the internet users who claim that they are fakes and idiots.

They figure that if they can get to Hollywood and put a stop to Miramax making the movie then nobody will have anything bad to say about Jay and Silent Bob.

So from this point they embark on a mission to get to Hollywood to intercept the making of the movie to pick up their movie cheque and stop the internet users writing negative things about them.

On the way they meet a hitchhiker who tells them the laws of hitchhiking. They catch a lift with a group of super hot jewel thieves and become wanted men when the cross paths with the federal wildlife Marshall. Their quest takes them on a journey from New Jersey to Hollywood where a final showdown with the police, jewel thieves, wildlife Marshall and the film makers themselves will determine the fate of Jay and Silent Bob.

The Cast

The DVD Extras

The bonus disc is packed with extras and includes a whopping 42 deleted scenes with an introduction and comments to them all from Smith himself as well as other cast members. I can tell you that watching the deleted scenes themselves gives you a total run time of over 90 minutes. Yes that's 90 minutes of deleted scenes. We are also treated to what is entitled the 'Gag Reel' in which we receive a short intro from Smith and then about 5 minutes of errors and mistakes from certain scenes from the shooting of the film. The 'Secret Stash section includes some out-takes footage as well as several TV spots. The behind the scenes footage is rather interesting as we get a short look of the movie in production as well as other actors that were going to be cast for the roles that were eventually taken by the likes of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

We are also treated to a 'Comedy Central's Reel Comedy which includes some very funny interviews for Mewes and Smith in the form of their characters Jay and Silent Bob. Like most DVD extras there is also a story boards section which includes hundreds of drawings from the movie. Most of which revolve around more graphic scenes including the Scooby doo scene as well as a slightly different escape with the ape scene. They are quite funny and worth checking out.

There is a 'Music Video's section also which includes Afromans - 'Because I Got High' and also Stroke 9's 'Kick Some Ass'. The latter includes Mewes and Smith dancing and rapping along and is quite amusing. Finally we get the 'Cast and Crew Filmographies which include basic movie listings for the actors but also has a trivia section which includes sound clips and pictures relating to the actors in the film.

My Verdict

As I stated earlier until I actually went to see this film I really had no clue as to whom Jay and Silent Bob were. From the opening seen though I was almost in tears with laughter as it totally was not what I was expecting. Mewes and Smith are nothing short of spectacular in the lead roles as Jay and Silent Bob and the plot to many may seem to be stupid but it fits with the movie itself and is very enjoyable from start to finish. Not during any point did I find myself wishing something better would happen.

I can't fault the movie at all so if your looking for negatives I cant really give you any except for the obvious being that if you're offended easily and don't like profanity then this movie is not for you. If like me and you had never heard of the movie and you start watching it then you will probably switch it straight off if that kind of stuff offends you but if you have never seen it and it doesn't bother you then you will be sitting there wondering how you have not seen this earlier.

The jokes and gags through out the film will have you laughing all the way through. Jason Mewes has some of the best lines ever and gives a brilliant performance for his character. Kevin Smith is fantastic as Silent Bob despite the fact that he only says about 2 lines during the entire film. Smith has been criticised in some of his other films for making them too stiff looking whatever that means to whoever writes the stuff. However he hits the nail on the head in this movie and I think he is a writer who is a bit too under-rated in my opinion. I have watched some of his other movies and although Jay and Silent Bob is by far the better one I think Smith deserves a lot more credit that what he gets.

Outside of the main 2, the actors who filled the roles for the other characters just fit perfectly. One of the top performances has to go to Will Ferrel as the federal Wildlife Marshall Willenholly. I have always said I prefer Ferrell's work when he is not the lead actor. I always felt he is at his best when paired up or as part of the lead. If anyone has seen 'Night At The Roxbury' then you will know what I mean. There is one scene in particular where Willenholly and the sheriff have surrounded a small cafe which is hiding Jay and Silent Bob along with a monkey. Jay and Silent Bob exit from the cafe along with the monkey who is dressed in child's clothing and the following quotes are nothing short of hilarious after Willenholly agrees to let them go. Quote: Sherriff: "Are you f****** crazy? Now they may be gay, but that's not their son. That's the ape". Willenholly: "I think I would recognize an ape if I saw one, okay? And the only thing I do recognize right now is the political fiasco I'm about to avoid here by letting this butt-f****** Brady Bunch go". The humour that Ferrel gives for this character all the while making you believe that he is actually serious is brilliant and made me laugh ever time he was on screen.

At no point during the film was I ever wondering how much longer is actually left. You kind of lose track of the time as the film is so entertaining you don't really care. Most films will either start well and go quiet and pick up again at certain parts but this movie was a laugh from the get go and never let up.

I have seen a lot of comedy films over the years but this one is the best of the lot. You might understand If before I seen the movie I was already a big Jay and Silent Bob fan but I wasn't. I was just one of those people who went to see a movie and loved it. A lot of comedy films out there with the exception of Scary Movie 1 and 2 try to be funny but they take it to the point of just being stupid. Jay and Silent Bob take it to the extreme of being funny, silly, idiotic, stupid and offending and get away with it. No other movie I have seen has been able to pull it off like this one.

Despite being optimistic about it when I first went to see it I was totally taken by surprise. Its now one of my favourite movies and will take some beating to change my opinion. Although you will miss out seeing it on the big screen as I was lucky enough to do I still strongly recommend you get a copy of the DVD. As well as a really funny movie which you can enjoy with your friends the second disc is packed with tons of extras that's sure to keep you entertained.

5 stars out of 5. Simple as that.

Summary: The funniest movie ever made. Guaranteed to laugh
