I wasn't a fan of French Cinema or Gerard Depardieu until I was given this DVD. This has now become one of my favourite films and I would recommend it to anyone. Beginning with the amazing soundtrack that we all know from those Stella Artois adverts, the film has a slow start and at first I thought I wouldn't last the course, ... Read the complete review

Jean de Florette sees Gerard Depardieu taking a part in an ensemble cast of French cinematic heavyweights. Daniel Auteil, Yves Montand and Gerard were all well-established screen actors by the time that Claude Berri cast them in this lavish adaptation of Marcel Pagnol's novel of provincial French life. But we'd better clarify ... Read the complete review

Jean de Florette and it’s sequel, Manon des Sources, were filmed in 1986 by director Claude Berri and are a wonderful interpretation of the highly regarded French novel, Water on the Hills, by Marcel Pagnol. Filmed in French, with English sub-titles, the cast includes Gerard Depardieu, Yves Montand and Daniel Auteuil. ... Read the complete review

When I discovered the English translations of the books in one volume, I simply had to buy it! ... Read the complete review

The French insisted on retaining this because, so one of them said, ... Read the complete review

These two films are quite simply my favourite films ever. The setting is beautiful, the characters are wonderful , the acting unequalled in my opinion and the story gripping and moving. Yves Montand gives an incredible performance as the proud and stubborn Papet whilst Daniel Auteil shows whatan incredible actor he is with his potrayal ... Read the complete review

This is a beautiful film. Everything about it is beautiful which, when you consider the story, is quite an achievement. Depardieu is brilliant in this - it could have been written for him. He is incredibly passionate and, as such, sometimes the subtitle translation does not do him justice. However, subtitles or no subtitles, ... Read the complete review
