Advantages: The storyline is good and it is not too gory
Disadvantages: None that I can think of
Darry and Trish are two American teenagers driving home from college for a holiday. The road they are on is long and another driver in a souped-up van who they later discover disposing of what they think is a body. They decide to investigate, as only teenagers in horror movies do, and end up being terrorized by the driver, who turns out to be a supernatural being. It turns out that Darry has something that The Creeper needs [he's never named as 'The Creeper' in the film as far as I could make out, only in publicity material surrounding it]. I'm not going to ruin the ending by saying here what it is that The Creeper is after, nor how it relates to the title song 'Jeepers Creepers', but suffice it to say it does make for a surprisingly downbeat ending.
This is a perfectly good early-2000s horror movie. It's target audience of course teenagers, hence the teenage protagonists, but there is enough of a plot for a more mature, sophisticated audience to enjoy. It is nice to watch a still reasonably recent horror movie and not feel that the producers have gone overboard with the gore, which seems to happen more and more in horror movies today. The special effects are good and as already mentioned, the title song plays into the plot in an unexpected manner.
The DVD I saw was a 'vanilla' version with no special features, although I am led to believe that there is another version available which features an audio commentary by the director, Victor Salva, in addition to some deleted and extended scenes. It is worth noting that the film does not feel as if it is 'missing' any scenes in the format I saw, so these extras may be superfluous.
CAST:
Gina Philips as Trish
Justin Long as Darry
Jonathan Breck as The Creeper
CREW:
Written and directed by Victor Salva
Produced by Francis Ford Coppola (amongst others)
Music by Bennett Salvay
DID YOU KNOW?
The Creeper was originally going to be played by Lance Henriksen, who is perhaps most famous as Bishop in the 'Aliens' movies, and Frank Black in the 'Millennium' television series.
SEQUEL:
A second movie, set a few days later, was released in 2003, two years after the original film. It is called, quite creatively, 'Jeepers Creepers II' [note the hint of sarcasm!].
Summary: A good 'Friday night' movie
