Jeepers Creepers was released in 2001 and written and directed by Victor Salva. The fim is only 91 minutes long and rated 15 because of strong language, violence and some bloody horror.
With a tiny budget of just over $2 million, Jeepers Creepers was a huge box office success, making nearly $60 million worldwide. MGM has announced a third film will be made, following Trisha's story with a chance of a fourth also being made.
PLOT
Derry and Trish are driving back home from a break from university through the North Florida countryside. The pair play a game of guessing number plates along the way but soon a big scary looking truck comes speedy up behind them, trying to drive them off the road. After their little scare, the carry on driving as normal but soon pass the van again but see the driver throw something wrapped in bloody cloths down an old pipe.
Derry is stupid enough to go check it out, after remembering about a couple that supposedly went missing along the same highway. Trish isn't so keen though, being the sensible one, but Derry goes anyway. Once he gets down the pipe though, he gets a lot more than he bargained for.
The 'Creeper' senses they've been down there and soon begins to follow them, knowing how scared Derry is. A psychic tells teh siblings what the monster really is, and what he's after, scaring them even more but will it finally satisfy it's hunger?
CAST
Justin Long as Darius "Darry" Jenner
Gina Philips as Patricia "Trish" Jenner
Jonathan Breck as The Creeper
Patricia Belcher as Gezelle Gay Hartman
Eileen Brennan as Cat Lady
Derry and his sister Trish, played by Justin Long and Gina Philips, have fabulous on screem chemisty as siblings and to me, their relationship was very believable. To begin with they bicker and argue in the car but towards the end of the film, they show eral compassion for each other. Although Jeepers Creepers is a horror, and described as 'The best U.S horror movie of the past 10 years', Derry and Gina's characters made it lighthearted and funny in places.
Although the two leads are nice looking, I'm glad they didn't cast the obvious beauties. Both characters come across as regular people and I don't think this shows a lot of the time when astonishingly beautiful actors are cast.
I loved the idea of the monster in this film. Waht i really liked was the fact that we dont get much of an explanation about him. All we know is that he has to feed every so many years and trives on the smell of fear in his victims. Most horrors these days explain the killers' motives and background too much but I think not knowing adds to the thrill.
Although I didn't find this film exactly scary, I did find it pretty creepy and gross a lot of the time. Just thinking about the killer's lair creeps me out. I didn't think the ending was particularly predictable until about half way through when we start to hear 'Jeepers Creepers, where'd you get those peepers' quite a few times and it was certainly a different ending in comparison to your average horror.
I liked Jeepers Creepers a lot more than I thought I would have and it's now part of my collection, along with the sequel.
Summary: 2 thumbs up
