Jeepers Creepers (DVD)
Advantages: The suspense is killing me!
Disadvantages: Acting lets it down
Having watched this a number of years ago, I saw the sequel the other night. It spurred me to rewatch this once again, and I'm glad I did.
What starts out as an apparent road rage movei soon descends into something altogether more sinister. Billed as a horror movie, I initially thought it was just another tense thriller, but as the violence starts to heighten, the horror aspect comes to the fore.
Essentially, it features what at first seems like a mysterious man hidden by various items of clothing, as he doggedly pursues the two youngsters who think they have run him off the road. The pace heightens, and we begin to question the human nature of the follower. It's really the suspense of the film and the fear of the unknown that is its power, and whereas this is completely lost in the second film, the sequel's plot and basic approach is a lot more appealing.
This film relies very much on the unknown to develop our heightened sense of appreciating it as a horror film. The acting is dubious, as the cast spend the whole film with their mouths open, dreading what might be round the next corner. If you haven't seen this film before, or its sequel, then it's very tense and you really don't know what to expect any more than they do.
The special effects are done cleverly, using darkness and flitting glimpses of the pursuer to frustrate in terms of finding out who or what he is. It is only towards the end of the film that the suspense is lifted and we find out the truth as to what we are faced with. The film manages to draw you in, making you feel as if you are part of it, and although it doesn't really do anything special, the twisting plot and jumpy moments do make it impressive.
I find it hard to compare this to its sequel as they are quite different in their approaches. Victor Salva takes certain elements through to the second, but relies very much on the fear of the unknown in this one, and it works very well.
Jeepers Creepers is a film I would recommend just as long as you're a horror fan. If you scare easily, this probably isn't for you. It's available from amazon.co.uk for £2.57, which is a good price for a good film. Recommended.
Summary: Creepy horror with the fear of the unknown at its core
