Advantages: watchable, better than the first
Disadvantages: predictible
Jeepers Creepers was one of the worst films I’d seen in a long while, I found it ridiculous. It was one of those films that sticks in your mind because its really really bad. So when someone lent my other half Jeepers Creepers 2 I didn’t have high hopes, in fact I was quite curious to see what a sequel to such a daft film would be like, as I’ve found that generally sequels to films are usually worse than the original.
I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not saying that it would win any Oscars, but it was quite good and I would’ve thought that even if I hadn’t began with such low expectations.
The plot is fairly predictable and reminds me of quite a few films. A school bus full of teenagers break down on a deserted back road and full prey to an evil monster. After watching quite a few films similar to this I’d be tempted to always go on main roads in America!
The film starts with the evil bird like monster of Jeepers Creepers waking up, every 23 years he wakes up and feeds for 23 days. He’s been around for thousands of years and has killed countless people. A young boy working on his dad’s farm is snatched by the monster as his helpless dad and brother look on. This all fits in with the plot later on.
A high school football team are on their way back from a victorious game, when their bus breaks down on a deserted stretch of road. The monster is staling them and tyres on the bus are being deliberately broken by knifes the monster is throwing. Horror soon replaces frustration at their delay as their teachers start to be snatched away by the monster.
Soon the teachers have all gone and the kids are left stranded and terrified wondering when the monster will be back, who he will take and whether they can do anything to stop him. Their situation isn’t helped by rivalries and resentments amongst the kids coming to boiling point as they try desperately to figure out what to do. I’ll leave the plot there as I don’t want to give to much away.
The acting in this film is fairly one dimensional. It’s one of those films when as all the actors really have to do is scream and look scared and they do this adequately. They all seem to have the same expression to convey fear, which makes the acting a bit wooden in places The plot is predictable without any twists or anything particularly original, nothing in this film is particularly surprising.
I’ve never really understood what the monster in Jeepers Creepers is and where he comes from, it’s not really gone into (although maybe it was in Jeepers Creepers 1 and I’d given up paying attention by that point) What it does have is that ‘jumpy’ quality when you wonder when the baddie is going to come back and whats going to happen and this kept me watching even though it certainly wasn’t the best film I’ve ever seen.
