Jennifer's Body (DVD)
Advantages: Some great one liners
Disadvantages: It just doesn't go anywhere
This is an American teen horror comedy which was written by Cody Diablo the oscarwinning writer of Juno.
Cheerleader Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) and her geeky best friend Needy Lesnicky (Amanda Seyfried) are a strange mix a hot cheerleader and a frumpy geek but they've been best friends since nursery school.
However one day after watching a gig, Jennifer is bitten by some vampires who play in the rock band (!) anad becomes possessed with eating men.
The best thing about the film is the dialogue, like Juno there are some fantastic knowing one liners, but its hard to tell from this film what Diablo was trying to achieve, its not an expose of the ridiculousness of guys or a film promoting girl power, it is a mix and never quite gets its point across.
The plot itself is unsteady and the direction slow paced so you lose some interest in whats going on, you understand why Jennifer and Needy are friends but not why Needy has a psychic connection or needs to find who murdered the men in her town. A lot of areas go unexplored unfortunately.
The film itself reminds me of a lighter version of the Scream trilogy, it is not frightening as we simply see a number of set pieces where randy chaps get bitten by the otherworldly Jennifer, and it isn't funny enough to match Scream either. Its kind of a teen adventure with elements of comedy and horror thrown in.
In terms of the cast this film is all about Fox and Seyfried, the selling point of the film seems to be how great Fox looks, and she does, but as in other films this simply goes on to show that once you step past that superficial layer of judging looks there isn't much underneath as her acting is average. Perhaps that's the point of the film, if so I missed it. Seyfried is clearly a better actor but has the classic trick of being given glasses, frumpy clothes and a bad haircut to take away from the fact she too is a beautiful woman.
Personally I found the film ok, it wasn't that great and wasn't that funny, it didn't scare me and I didn't come away with enhanced feelings about any of the actors, it's a film with a wayward plot, some funny lines and isn't scary at all.
I rented the film from lovefilm and would suggest you do the same as it is £11.98 on Amazon and really isn't worth that.
