Advantages: Acting is spectacular
Disadvantages: Not much
Jerry Maguire is a comedy/ drama film that was released in 1996 and starred Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger. It is rated 15 due to a lot of bad language, one heavy sex scene and some minor violence and is 139 minutes long.
Plot
Jerry Maguire is a rich and successful sports agent with an all star client list. One night, he suddenly gets a conscience and feels bad about all of the lies he has previously told his clients. Unable to sleep, Jerry writes down exactly how he feels in a mission statement, his moment of madness. He gives every single employee in the office a copy but by the time he gets to work the next day, he suddenly regrets his actions and it is far too late to reverse them. Jerry looses his job, his girlfriend and pretty much his life.
Jerry has to think quickly and asks which of the employees will go with him to start a new business, something truthful and pure, which he totally believes he can make work. One shy, quiet woman, Dorothy, is the only person to stand up and agree to go with him but once they leave the office, she immediately has second thoughts. Jerry promises her that everything will be fine, but will it?

My Opinion
Although I'm not really a fan of sports films, I am a fan of Tom Cruise and I think this is one of his best films...next to Top Gun of course. If you, like me, don't really like sports then I would urge you to give this film a try anyway because there isn't really that much actual sports in the film, it is more about the behind the scenes action.
Tom Cruise was amazing as Jerry and I could really feel the emotion he brought to the role. At times, I was able to sympathise with him but then at others, I wanted to shout at the TV for him being so stupid and arrogant. Jerry Maguire must have been quite a hard role to play but Cruise really brings him to life.
I usually hate Renee Zellweger with a passion and I normally find her extremely annoying but this is one of the two films that I have quite liked her in. I did feel very sorry for her character, Dorothy, throughout most of the film because it was clear that she had other opinions to Jerry and was quite out of her league with him. The only problem I did have was the lack of chemistry but that was also a fault on Tom Cruise's part. I do hate to see lead characters who don't seem to have any interest in each other on screen.
Cuba Gooding, Jr stole the limelight for me in this film. His character, Rod, was fabulous and immensely humourous and entertained me as soon as we met him in the story. I was glad to hear that he won an Academy Award because he truly deserved it.
The film does go along quite slowly but there are a lot of important issues dealt with at the same time. The film deals with family issues, love, materialism and how some people put their work before everything else. Even though the film is quite serious at times, there are plenty of funny parts that make up for this.
Jerry Maguire will appeal to both sexes, as there is enough action and romance for both. If you are really into your chick flicks then you will probably end up crying at this film, just as I did. Fantastic film.
Summary: One of my all time favourites
