Jersey Girl (DVD) ... released 27 September, 2004 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL / A kind but workaholic husband, Ollie, finds his life thrown into turmoil when his wife dies during child birth. As his depression spirals down into the realms of a mental breakdown he loses his job and it is through his surviving daughter, Gertie and through the challenge of fatherhood that he must learn to rebuild his life. As he slowly learns to function again he meets Maya (Liv Tyler), also a single parent, and although he feels it is too soon for him to take romantic steps forward, the two form a cohesive bond of mutual support. In this mature departure from writer and director Kevin Smith's previous outing 'Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back' he returns to the themes of love and loss touched on in his third feature 'Chasing Amy'. Ben Affleck plays Ollie Trinkie.

Will he succeed or will he listen to his daughter's will and stay in Jersey, well you'll have to watch to find out. The plot is a pretty basic single parents struggle against the world and is totally different to anything that Smith has attempted before. It has been billed as a comedy but I would have to say it doesn't totally slot into that category. I'd pers...more

I've been a huge fan of Kevin Smith films for quite a few years now. His alternative comedy style has won him a great number of fans over the years. Everyone seems to have a favourite movie from him, my own personal choice being Dogma. It worried me however when I heard the news that he was stepping away from the comedy films that had made him such a cult hero to make something more main stream. He stayed true to his beloved Jersey but got rid of his regular characters and tried something different. The story follows Ollie Trinke (Ben Affleck) a music publicist fin New York with the world his Oyster. That is until he meets Gertie (Jennifer Lopez) and his world ...  Read the complete review

Jersey Girl is one of those films that I wanted to like a lot more than I actually did. I am a huge fan of Kevin Smith, but this is a huge departure from his crude but sweet comedies such as Clerks I and II, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Dogma. Jersey Girl is an attempt at the romantic comedy genre, and whilst I respect him for branching out, this is a film unfortunately plagued by a lot of back luck, least of all that it stars Bennifer (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez) at the heat of their infamy, not long after they were almost universally panned for their horrible rom-com Gigli. Jersey Girl revolves around Oliver "Ollie" Trinké (Ben Affleck), ...  Read the complete review

Regardless of how wonderful Clerks 2 may have turned out, it's something of a pity that writer / director Kevin Smith took the wholly-undeserved criticism of this beautiful, funny, heartfelt comedy so very seriously. The first of his films to deal with characters and situations unrelated to the "View Askewniverse" established in his much-loved debut, Clerks, Jersey Girl was met with hostility from most every corner - from critics repelled by its unabashed sentimentality, by fans seemingly unable to deal with anything that isn't stacked heel-to-throat with stoner and penis gags (although there are plenty of both of offer), and from general audiences grown weary ...  Read the complete review

“It's that kind of mentality that allows the cancer-producing industry to survive. Of course we're all going to die someday, but do we have to pay for it? Do we actually have to throw hard-earned dollars on the counter and say, "Please, Mr. Merchant of Death, sir, please, sell me something that will stink up my breath and my clothes and fry my lungs?" Those words are among the cleanest lines you’ll find in Kevin Smith’s Clerks. A $25,000 black and white indie that shot the writer/director to cult fame and fortune. A spate of other films followed including Mallrats, Dogma and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. All were pretty adult in their comedy and ...  Read the complete review

I'm a HUGE fan of Kevin Smith, I love his Movies, I LOVE his Evening With Q&A Sessions and have even listened to his "Smodcast" podcasts with enjoyment. And so with that I popped in the Jersey Girl DVD to finally get around to seeing this and seeing what all the fuss was about, its a 2004 Comedy / Dram film directed by Smith and starring Kevin Smith staple Ben Affleck , Liv Tyler and even an appearance by one time other half of "Beniffer " Jennifer Lopez. The Plot : Oliver "Ollie" Trinke ( Ben Affleck ) is a powerful media publicist living in New York City but originally raised in New Jersey, ...  Read the complete review
