Well, it seems all I see at the movies these days is kiddie films! But then, there’s so many more of them nowadays - have you noticed that? So many, in fact, that the general upturn in quality and quantity led to the Academy adding a new category at this year’s Oscars; that of Best Animated Feature. Shrek robbed Monsters Inc. but I was intrigued by the remaining contender, the eponym that is: Jimmy Neutron! From the same stable as Toy Story and, more recently, Monsters.Inc comes the futuristic Jimmy Neutron. When we were over in the US last October our DisneyMGM studio visit took us on a tour of an actual movie-making studio and we came across the groundwork under construction for this particular movie. About a year ago I was sitting in a nearly empty cinema when I was confronted with a very lengthy trailer that featured all manner of whizzes and bangs in a blaze of lively and colourful CGI glory. It appeared that this trailer was advertising the forthcoming Jimmy Neutron, I had heard nothing of the film up until that point and for the following year after I heard nothing more. The people who would probably recognize young Jimmy and his quiff are those that tune into Nickelodeon, once in a while a small short cartoon will appear featuring Jimmy's exploits. Jimmy Neutron – Boy Genius is an animated movie set in the aptly named town of Retroville. Although the animation is computer generated the town has a distinctly 50’s feel to it. It’s adult inhabitants also dress in the style of the 50’s, although the main juvenile characters seem to have been updated a little – both in terms of their clothing and behaviour. I had taken my daughter to see the new Peter Pan movie but it had sold out so I was duly informed that "we can see Jimmy Neutron instead, mom". It transpires that the free gadget spoons she has been getting in Frosties are something to do with this boy genius so I duly paid my money and in we went. I find kids movies are either really good or really bad and this, thankfully, was a good one. It tells the tale of Jimmy Neutron a boy genius whose contact with aliens leads to all the parents being kidnapped to be sacrificed to a giant chicken alien.
