Advantages: It finishes eventually
Disadvantages: Wholesale rip-off of the James Mason version
Take Brendan Fraser who isn't a very good actor, steal every good idea from the James Mason version of this movie, add in an annoying child (because every movie involving Dinosaurs needs an annoying child) add in a rather sassy female Icelandic Mountain Guide and when you throw 3D into the equation you have this rather poor excuse for a film.
For an action movie its rather dull and uncompelling, if its a kids movie there aren't enough dinosaurs (but the annoying emo teen nephew does solve the Vernian puzzle in the book) & its rather predictable (especially if you've either read the book or seen the James Mason version) so it offers no surprises or scares that you won't be expecting.
Steal a scene from Bill & Teds Bogus Journey (the falling scene) as well as a scene from Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom (the mine car sequence that was done much better when Spielberg shot it using a 35mm camera and stop motion over 20 years ago) and with Frasers character constantly referring to the book for what to do next it did make me wonder why they just didn't sell you a copy of the book with a label marked "Read this, its cheaper, quicker and more entertaining than our movie. Or buy the James Mason version, its exactly the same as this without the vomit inducing 3D effects".
Add in a minor storyline about a lab for sale, the emo teens father having gone missing (neither of which add anything to the movie 1 iota) as well as the insane notion that a PSP will Google at 30,000 feet and you will be left wondering why you wasted your money.
I couldn't watch it with the 3D glasses (I have colour vision issues and they make me feel very ill indeed) so watched it without, the red/blue effects aren't very heavy during the movie apart from a few very obvious places so you can watch the film if you lose your 3D glasses.
The film trots along at an even pace but seems to be over very quickly without much having happened, 3 big encounters aren't much of a plot and the rather annoying ending that leaves it open for a sequal made me wonder why they bothered.
Summary: Don't bother unless your desperate

- 31/08/09 Got this film out the other day at Blockbuster free because I rented 4 films for a tenner. You're making me think, "Is it worth watching?" |
