Jiyu Nanohana is your typical junior high school student, she moves to a new town so her father can be inspired to write novels as a profession and earn an income for the two of them. Jiyu likes nothing better than to cook and hang out with her new friends. However after a few days of moving she is chased around by a 300 year old samurai who is convinced she is the next generation of an ancient ninja sword technique.
The samurai places something called a "lovely eye patch" (which is a large pink heart shaped eye patch ) on Jiyu's face and suddenly the soul of his old master Jubei inhabits her body. This takes an awful tole on Jiyus body however as she is being constantly chased by Jubei's old enemies which hold a 300 year old grudge against Jubei. She usually gets bad fevers after transformations and gets really sick. Though every time Jiyu beats a samurai in battle they turn over a new leaf and drop their 300 year old grudge.
Jiyu is constantly trying to get rid of the eye patch but her 300 year old samurai assistant keeps appearing out of now where and brings it back to her.
All the boys and male teachers fall in love with Jiyu and there is a lot of staring at Jiyu's bust in the series, but there is no nudity, or blood. There is fantasy violence but that is about it, there is barely anything objectionable about this series, except when Jiyu is sick or explaining about how her mother died.
The cast for the series is quites small, it includes Jiyu, her dad, four male friends and two female friends, we also have her samurai assistant and the random samurai ninjas jumping in every now and again, but most characters are introduced within the first few episodes. I think this is good because a lot of newer series have the habit of unnecessarily bombarding the viewer with more characters constantly to keep you interested.
The animation is top notch, though rather strange. For instance if a character is not important they are drawn deliberately really badly and stuck in the back of a scene to give an audio commentary for the scene or to slag off the artist. The anime has a unique sort of style also.
The music is very j popish the series dosent have an opening scene, but the end scene involves the entire cast riding bikes, even the samurai. The lyrics are about reaching out wide and being open to new experiences.
The dvd features include dual languages and English subtitles. Some things are left out of the English dubbing track but the voice acting is still very good. The set comes with two discs and thirteen episodes.
This is a very girly anime though and seems to focus more on father daughter relationships. The designer for this anime also helped in the making of the fruits basket anime. So if you watched and liked that anime you should like this one too.
The series is around a decade old now and you can probably pick it up on ebay for under 20 pounds.
