Judge Dredd (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 06 December, 1999 at Pathe Distribution / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Judge Dredd is one of those movies that doesn't have a brain of its own, so it can only rip off a lot of ingredients from other, better movies. It's a mishmash of Blade Runner, Total Recall, and The Road Warrior, with a dash of Star Wars tossed in for good measure. As if that weren't enough, it's got Sylvester Stallone, who seems to be the only one in the movie who's in on the game and knows it's all a sci-fi scam. Like The Fifth Element a few years later, Judge Dredd depicts a futuristic megalopolis packed with crowded vertical overgrowth and rampant commerce, where anarchy reigns supreme. Violent "block wars" are fought by lawless citizens with machine guns, and Judge Dredd (Stallone) is one of the city's heavily armed policemen, given free rein to judge and execute the perpetrators of violence. But Dredd himself is subjected to judgement and swift justice when his own gun is identified in the murder of a prominent TV reporter, forcing him to do whatever he can to clear his name. Diane Lane plays his partner in crime-fighting and romance, and Rob Schneider provides juvenile comic relief as Dredd's streetwise sidekick. Impressive special effects are on vivid display, and the movie's fun for what it's worth. Lower your expectations and you just might enjoy it. --Jeff Shannon

Newest Review: ... a load of garbage! They break the first rule of Dredd - he removes his helmet a short way into the film. Accepted that ... more

 ... Stallone was a big actor (at the time) and he probably didn't want to work his way through the film without showing his face, but why, oh why didn't they choose a different actor for the role and portray Dredd the way he has always been? Then, to make matters worse - they add a 'comic' character to accompany him. As irritating as Scrappy Doo, but without the same level of 'cuteness', he 'wise cracks' his way through the film and makes you wonder which imbecile was responsible for creating this rubbish! The good news t...more

Crowned Review Judge Dredd (DVD): Judged Dreddful (1187 words)
by - written on 02/04/04 (Very useful, 198 readings)
Rating:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "In the future, one man is the law." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The story line: The original Judge Dredd character was created by John Wagner, Pat Mills and Carlos Ezquerra in 1977 under the banner of 2000AD. This British cartoon character was an anti-hero based on his creator's own pessimistic predictions for where the world was headed. In the comics Dredd is a dark hero, this is no Superman out to save the pretty girl stuck on the railway line. The movie, released in 1995, starts in Megacity One. A huge fortified metropolis that probably started as ...  Read the complete review
Crowned Review Does Sylvester Stallone dream of electric lips? (1119 words)
The 1995 release Judge Dredd often cops a hiding from arm-chair critics for being a failed cousin of Blade Runner. Well, I've got the cleats on, and I'm going in to bat on behalf of Judge Dredd. I'm not going to swing at the idea that this film scales anywhere near the heights of Blade Runner, which is a dazzling benchmark in cinematic history, but I am going to suggest that it was never designed to. Ridley Scott's Blade Runner was spawned from Philip K. Dick's thought provoking novel "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?". Accordingly, the film was deep and meaningful as it delivered its collection of thrills and spills. It's ...  Read the complete review
Crowned Review Judge Dredd (DVD): Drudge Dreadful! (1032 words)
by - written on 23/09/08 (Very useful, 150 readings)
Rating:
So how dreadful is Judge Dreadful? Well it's not that dreadful but it's pretty dreadful, the first problem pretty obvious - Sylvester Stallone! Casting the big dumbbell as Dredd could have worked out though. Dredd is man of few words after all and as Stallone is known for his dim bulb slowness then this should have worked out. But Sly is also a dire actor and fails miserably to inject any character and energy into the role, winning the 1996 'Razzie' for this performance. It's essentially Stallone in a plastic suit. There's none of that dry ironic humor Schwarzenegger always seems to inject into this type of action film to make two dimensional characters entertaining and ...  Read the complete review
Premium Review Judge Dredd (DVD): JUDGED AND FOUND LACKING (660 words)
by - written on 25/10/01 (Very useful, 39 readings)
Ok wampy...be nice, there must be something nice to say about this movie... Well...it looks nice. The futuristic city of Megacity is all very Blade Runner meets Total Recall in their design. Dark streets with bright neon lights everywhere and flying vehicles...you know the kind of thing - the typical view of the future. The problem is that, were Judge Dredd the first movie to come up with this view of the future then it might warrant some praise, but the problem is that it isn't. In fact, its a long way down the list and its it somewhat boring. Boring too is the view of the future as being a violent place where society has crumbled and lawlessness reigns. ...  Read the complete review
