Advantages: Good film all round

Disadvantages: Nothing major to speak of

Judge Dredd is one of the most critically acclaimed and cult comics. In 1995, Sylvester Stallone was chosen to play the hard-nosed 'Judge', futuristic cops with judiciary powers in a dystopian future with heightened technology and no nonsense policing. With an impressive supporting cast and a solid level of special effects and a forward thinking director in Danny Cannon, this should have been right up Sly's alley.

And it sort of was. Sly, as Judge Dredd, is the most famous and true to the law Judge, and when he is wrongly accused of a crime, he is banished form the walls of the city to fend for himself forever in the wilderness outside the city. Meeting up with fellow criminal, the hopeless and hapless Fergie (Rob Schneider), and determined to prove his innocence, they find a way in and uncover a twisting and disturbing plot to rule the world!

Stallone does well as the hard nosed Dredd, and all he has to do really is sneer, and say 'I am the LAW!', whilst exposing his muscles and fighting a bit at the same time. His supporting cast have to do a bit more acting, but with the likes of Diane Lane, Arman Assante and the veteran actors Jurgen Prochnow and Max Von Sydow on hand to fill the main supporting roles, and a whole host of special effects thrown in, the film is actually very impressive.

Cannon does a good job of creating a believable futuristic city and plot, although I am sure real and true fans of the comic book with find a number of reasons to complain. However, I am not one of these, and found Judge Dredd to be a highly entertaining hour and a half of action. Villainous deeds and some impressive filming combine well with decent acting to give us a good film.

The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98, and would make an action loving teenager a decent present.

Summary: Good action packed adaptation of a favourite comic

Thought it was poor, a younger Dredd might have worked better.

There's a fantastic Judge Dredd film out there waiting to be made, I reckon. In the hands of the right director a film featuring Judge Death as the bad guy would be awesome. Fortunately, Stallone is too old for even the most incompetent director to consider using him again!! :)
