Advantages: not as bad as everyone says
Disadvantages: Unrealistic scenes
A lot of people have said it is a crap film and I shouldn't go and see it, but I went anyway expecting to be regretting it but I actually find it quite good even though it is far fetched. Judge Dredd is about the bleak future of America where crime and terrorists have peaked. The cops are the law bringers of the future and they can give the sentance they think is right hence the name "Judge". Sylvester Stallone does a belivable job of making his role seem real. Much of this is due to the limited emotional range required to play Judge Dredd, swaggering around like he owns the place or killing masses of people like he is a one man army. The movie doesn't even take Judge Dredd entirely seriously. At one point, Judge Dredd is assigned a comedian partner who openly mocks Judge Dredd's way of announcing himself at crime scenes: "I am the law!" "Judge Dredd" has a very basic plot. one of the best Judges, Judge Dredd, has been framed for committing a murder. Even though he gets to go to court, where he is defended before other Judges with the most advanced computer analysis techniques available (of video footage showing the alleged murder), he is found guilty, and sent to jail where just about everyone is after his blood as he put them there. Naturally, he manages to escape after a lucky turn of events and he sets out to do the impossible task of finding the real killer. Like I said before, I liked the movie but it isn't perfect. Some of the scenes are very unrealistic. For instance, at one point one of the senior Judges, fighting for control of the council on which he sits, is able to locate a discarded, but still fully operational, military robot used to "end" riots in the days before the Judges took over and created the present method for ruling the population. Unbelievably, the robot is found collecting dust in a pawn shop! After changing the battery they start it up and it'
s raring to go, complete with a massive array of built-in killing weopons. Soon enough, the robot is used to kill the other members of the council. Come on, a fully operational goverment killing machine sitting in a pawn shop and not taken away by the Judges. If the Judges are supposed to be good enough to take over the robots, wouldn't you think there is some sort of list on how many robots there are? That's like finding a WW2 tank in a pawn shop with live rounds to use. Just add petrol and let it loose on the police. Somehow, I don't think that would happen. Giving them a little credit, it was the first movie to use computer graphics to replace actors, like the scene where Dredd is on the flying law cycle. And it didn't look half bad. In conclusion, Judge Dredd is a good film and if you liked Demolition Man, you should give this movie a peek. Even if you didn't like Demolition Man, you should still give it a try.

- 09/10/01 I agree,it wasn't that bad. I never read the comic and as such I didn't have any pre-conceived ideas. Watch it, enjoy and forget. |
