The film's premise is very clever, with a twisted board game sucking people into an alternative world where wild animals run amok and flesh eating plants are around every corner. Robin Williams plays the lead role very well, and the child actors in the film are excellent, and not annoying at all, unlike most children in films (in my experience!) The ending of the film is very touching and I ...more

Premium Review Jumanji (DVD): It's a jungle out there (656 words)

Rating:

In recent years there have been an avalanche of dire kids films that have not matched up to the greatness of all 80s kids films (see "The Goonies" and "The Labyrinth" if you dont believe me"), yet "Jumanji" excells itself by being a more than watchable, entertaining and one you'd definately give a second watch. The film begins rather mysteriously, with the date being in the late 1800s where we see two boys trying to bury a hidden object that they are desperate to get rid of. Then suddenly the film cuts forward to 1969 where we see a young boy named Alan Parrish who is not having a very happy life. His father is incredibly ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Jumanji (DVD): Robin Williams at his best. (415 words)

Rating:

This film tells the story of an adventure that stems from a magical board game. The Jumanji game is being played by two 12 year old children when the boy (Alan) is sucked into the game. His only chance of escape is if somebody throws the dice and scores a 5 or an 8. This does not happen until 26 years later when two children move into the now abandoned house with their aunt. The children find the game in the attic and start to play the game. The events that follow include the release of Alan from the game. Now much older, Alan (played by Robin Williams) realises that the only way to stop the horrific events that are engulfing the town is to finish the game. For ...  Read the complete review

I went to see this film at the cinema when it first came out; I must have been 14 or 15 at the time, and had taken my six year old niece to see it. I remember that I didn't really enjoy it at the time; and that my niece was very frightened by some of the scarier moments in the film. I have caught it on TV a couple of times in the last few years, and watched it a few weeks back with my seven year old daughter. She was also a bit scared in places!
