 Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (DVD) ... released 04 March, 2002 at Yash Raj Films / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, NTSC / The 2001 romantic Bollywood drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham ("Happiness and Tears") proved to be even more successful than Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the highest-grossing Indian film of all time and one which was also directed by Karan Johar. Starring veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya, this tells the story of an Indian family who live in palatial comfort but who are riven when the eldest, adopted son Rahul marries Anjali (Kajol) a feisty and attractive woman but whose "lower breeding" causes his father to disapprove of her. Breaking his mother's heart, Rahul moves to Britain with Anjali before younger brother Rohan tries to go after him and end 10 years of estrangement to reunite the family. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is packed with contemporary trappings and production values but is in every way a traditional and generic Hindi movie. Those new to Bollywood might be disconcerted by some of the fashion statements or the mixture of drawn-out, lachrymose melodrama and slightly overplayed comedy-romantic interplay between Rahul and Anjali. There are also some scenes around Leicester Square and Westminster that are almost insulting in their stereotyping of hot, swinging London. However, K3G--as it has become affectionately known--is a riot of joyful colour, music and choreography (an embarrassing version of "It's Raining Men" is an exception). This is not a crossover movie, perhaps but a sumptuous treat for Bollywood fans. On the DVD: an anamorphic widescreen presentation with impeccable definition. He made his film debut in 1969, and as of 2008 he has starred in some 169 films, which is some amazing record. He also made a stint as the host of the Indian Version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, which he then gave up and was then given to his co star in this film Kahn.
Most people may not no that he actually was voted the greatest actor of the millennium beating the likes of Clint Eastwood, Al Pa Chino and even Marlin Brando.

Wow well this will be only my second review on a Bollywood film, and on a film that I really enjoyed watching. My previous review on Lagaan was also an inspirational film, largely due to the fact that it was about cricket; however this film is perhaps the total opposite. It's got so many general themes, and to be honest regardless of race or creed the message and understanding applies to every family in one aspect or another. Well it was my good friend Natasha’s birthday and we weren’t sure what to do for the first half of the day, course we were planning to get tanked at the end of the day but what to do with the afternoon?! This film had a huge build up before release and I'm glad that it has been a big success. Kabhi khushi kabhi gham means 'sometimes happiness, sometimes sadness'. I will call Kabhi khushi kabhi gham 'K3g' from now on. Oh yes- if you're a bit soppy, then don't forget the Kleenex. I think I'm the only person I know who watched the whole film with dry eyes! K3g has a huge cast in terms of popularity and success. Amitabh Bachchan who plays Yashovardhan Raichand in the film is the most successful Bollywood star to date.
