Kentucky Fried Movie (DVD)

Description: Genre: Comedy / Theatrical Release: 1977 / Director: John Landis / Actors: Donald Sutherland, George Lazenby ... / DVD ... more
Kentucky Fried Movie (DVD) ... released 22 March, 2004 at Prism Leisure / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Twenty years before the Farrelly Brothers turned raunch into acceptable film comedy, the team of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker exploited it first. The college threesome made it big with Airplane in 1980, but this 1977 cinematic version of their live theatre show was the ground zero for their talents. Kentucky Fried Movie is a mish-mash of sketches, fake commercials, and parodies with no central theme--except their crudeness and laugh-out-loud humour. Highlights include a commercial for "Scot Free", a board game based on the Kennedy assassination conspiracy; "The Wonderful World of Sex", in which a couple goes through foreplay with a self-help narrator instructing them step-by-step; and a 20-minute spoof of Bruce Lee films entitled "A Fistful of Yen". Brazen to a fault, the movie will reach for any punchline, no matter how crude (and those who flocked to the film's initial release looking for R-rated sex will remember the final sketch and the infamous trailer for "Catholic High School Girls in Trouble".) Directed by then-unknown John Landis (who went on to make The Blues Brothers and An American Werewolf in London) on a shoestring budget, the film has aged. But crassness, when this funny, is forever. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

... you were terrified by "Earthquake"... then you will be SCARED SH**LESS at the Samuel L. Bronkowitz production of "That's Armageddon!" 'A Fistful of Yen' is the one of the most hilarious skits ever committed to film. Brilliant and clever in every respect, it sends up chop-suey kung fu movies and B-movies in general to fantastic effect. At every possible occasion and with complete conviction the enemy Klahn reminds us that: 'We are building a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude. We forge...more

Premium Review Kentucky Fried Movie (DVD): 'We are building a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude ... (374 words)

For those who love 'Airplane' and 'The Naked Gun', then here's where it started, 'The Kentucky Fried Movie'. Episodic and sketch orientated it's a film brimming with hundreds of ideas. Everything from fake movie trailers, adverts and interviews - the film sends up the stuffiness of cinema in the 70's. Take 'That's Armageddon', a send-up of the disaster flicks that populated 70's cinema. Rather than spend an hour and half spoofing those sorts of films with 'Disaster Movie', the Zuckers say everything they need to say in three minutes. 'If you were thrilled by "The Towering Inferno"... if you were terrified by "Earthquake"... then you will ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review A Fistful of Catholic High School Rex Kramer's! (1415 words)

THE KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE There’s little doubt that Airplane! is probably the funniest film ever made. Whilst The Big Lebowski has come close to topping this distinction with it’s more zany and articulated brand of humour, the 600-odd gags in Airplane’s short running time, including the best visual gag ever in Ted Striker’s drinking problem, will likely never be bettered. Likewise, television’s Police Squad, despite running for only six episodes and pre-cursor to the Frank Drebin Naked Gun trilogy, is perhaps the funniest thing ever created for television – if only for the mock freeze frames at the end of each episode. And for all this we have to thank three ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Kentucky Fried Movie (DVD): Kentucky Fried Movie - Pointlessly Funny (372 words)
by - written on 15/04/04 (Useful, 72 readings)

We got this recently from screen select DVD rental company. This is an old film (made in 1977) and could be described as a cross between Monty python, the day today and aeroplane (which i have heard was created by the same person). The humour is pointlessly funny and the sketches are unrelated and do not generally flow into each other and are of different styles. I understand that a lot of the sketches are spoofs of other films, but as it's an old film this element was pretty much lost on me. There is also some scenes of a sexual nature so it's probably best to wait until younger children are out of the room/house before watching this. To give you a ...  Read the complete review
