Advantages: Funny, good acting, nice storyline
Disadvantages: There are no time outs in football, so maybe a little more research into the game would have helped!
Having subjected myself to a rather boring thriller and feeling let down by my film choice last night, I decided to put on this comedy I had rented from blockbusters. I am a amassive comedy fan, so this seemed like a safe bet to cheer me up!
I shall start by mentioning this film stars the fantastically adaptable Will Ferrell (a veteran of the comedy scene) in the main acting role in this film. He drew me to the film as I think he quite often makes a potentially bad comedy very funny. As usual he did not disappoint, and this is one of my favourite performances from the versatile comedian, as he really makes this role his own.
This hilarious American comedy tackles Phil Weston's (Ferrell) issues with his over competitive father Buck. Buck is excellently played by Robert Duvall, and him and Ferrell work very well together to give us great laughs. Buck runs a football team (referred to as soccer due to it being american), however when he leaves his own grandson on the substitutes bench Phil is not happy. Buck then trades his grandson to the team who are bottom of the league as he doesn't think he is good enough to be in his starting team. In a funny turn of events, softly spoken Phil ends up coaching his sons new team. Enlisting the help of his dad's neighbour and arch enemy, the two teams strive for championship glory; although Phil must first train his team to better understand the concepts and laws of football!
As this film develops Phil's character begins to change as he becomes more and more like his father, and the two eventually go head to head in a championship winning match. This film really made me laugh and was a fantastic feel good film. A family friendly, laugh along effort, with fantastic acting. I feel that anybody who loves the comedy genre would take kindly to this.
One thing I must get off my chest is that as a football fan I found it annoying to listen to the americanised football language used. The way they refer to football as soccer, for starters (though this is understandable as they have american football). More so I was irritated by the references to a kit as a uniform, and even more the use of a 'time out' which does not happen in football. This is actually something I considered before renting the dvd as I knew it would irritate me!
Summary: This is definitely a good family comedy
