~ Plot ~
4 years ago in a Texas chapel a wedding party is brutally slain by 4 members of the Deathly Viper Assassin Squad led by a man named Bill. The Bride is lying in a blood stained wedding dress having been beaten before a gun is pointed at her head when she tells Bill the baby is his just as he pulls the trigger and shoots her in the head.
Somehow she survives and The Bride awakes from a four year coma in hospital to find her baby is gone and all she can think about is getting revenge on the people who did this to her.
The film is mainly about The Bride setting out to kill O-Ren Ishii and Vernita Green (I presume the other two, Elle Driver and Bill, will be dealt with in Kill Bill Vol 2.). Every time The Bride’s name is mentioned it is beeped out and so we are unsure what her name is.
In typical Tarantino style, the film is full of blood, gore, and foul language. Though after the first half hour you become desensitised and the blood and foul language seem to sink into the background as it appears to with every Tarantino movie I’ve watched. Though obviously if you don’t like violence you won’t get through the first half hour! The film involves a lot of martial arts style fighting which is quite impressive.
There are small parts of humour dotted around to ease the tension, but generally it’s quite a high strung film. Though the humour may not be to everyone’s taste – such as a woman slipping and sliding on puddles of blood. There are parts in the film that are utterly ridiculous and I did wonder a few times why I was watching the film! For example, when The Bride takes on at least 100 of O-Ren Ishii’s “protectors” and manages to escape pretty much unscathed having maimed or killed them.
Uma Therman is well cast in this role and portrays The Bride as ruthless and driven by revenge, but there is still a human-ness about her and she isn’t a complete monster. Lucy Lui is also a very good actress in this and is very convincing as the head of the ‘Japanese criminal council’.
The film is split into chapters which I liked. The film also jumps around a lot in time which keeps the interest going, but all revolving around the wedding massacre which keeps reappearing, showing how each character is involved in the film.
This is a good film, but nothing like I expected it to be. I still prefer Resevoir Dogs out of all Tarantino’s movies, but I will definitely be watching Kill Bill Vol 2. soon.
You can buy Kill Bill Vol1. from Amazon “used & new” for £1.48.
Summary: Definately be watching Kill Bill Vol. 2

I think all of his films are very violent. It's his trademark. As for being unrealistic. I think that's what makes the film so good. :)
Nice review. :) |
