Kingpin (DVD) ... Quaid ... / DVD released 15 November, 1999 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / The team behind Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary--two really stupid, gross-out films that worked and were quite funny--also made King Pin, a really stupid, gross-out comedy that doesn't work and isn't funny at all. Woody Harrelson stars as a former bowling phenomenon with a hook for a hand, and Randy Quaid is an Amish farmer with a hidden talent for pins. The two join forces and get a sexy business partner (Vanessa Angel), and the film starts looking more and more like a jokey variation of The Colour of Money. The Colour of Money, however, didn't feature jokes about having oral sex with a hideous landlady or defecating in a sink or dragging disgusting stuff out of one's teeth with a length of floss. Bill Murray provides some much-needed relief as Harrelson's ex-partner turned rival. How come this stuff is obnoxious while the equally perverse punch lines of There's Something About Mary are a riot? It's a great mystery, all right, but there it is. --Tom Keogh

... some time prior to this. Woody Harrelson as Roy Munson is a young bowling star that is looking to leave his small time town to make it big as a bowling champion. In one particular tournament, he defeats the seasoned pro Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray). McCracken is of course none too pleased, and after he sabotages Munson's car, convinces him to help him in a scam to get money out of people. However, it all goes horribly wrong and McCracken sets up Munson whilst he escapes himself, resulting in the angry patrons shoving...more

- Introduction - Kingpin was shown quite late at night on a terrestrial (ie. free to air) TV channel a couple of months or so back. I had heard of it before but I hadn't seen it and given the cast, I decided I had to record it to watch later. It was made in 1996 but I hadn't seen it before. Read on for more information about the movie and what I thought about it... - Main Credits (non-actors, which are mentioned further on in the review) - Source:- IMDB (see:- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116778/fullcredits) Directors: - Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly Writers:- Barry Fanaro, Mort Nathan Producers:- Brad Krevoy, Steven ...  Read the complete review

Not being a big comedy fan, when I was given this video I wasn’t too bothered about watching it. Yet this movie came from the creators of, ‘Dumb And Dumber’, and ‘There’s Something About Mary’, so I thought that it was worth a look. The film is based around one main character, Roy Munsen (Woody Harrelson), who from an early age demonstrates a major talent for bowling and becomes the 1979 Amateur State Champion. So the professional tour looms on the horizon, and with the help of bitter rival Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray) he tries to hustle a few extra bucks. Unfortunately it alls goes wrong for Roy who turns from bowling wizard ...  Read the complete review

Being a big fan of the Farrelly brothers and their gross out comedies such as 'Dumb and Dumber' and 'There's Something About Mary',this was an early aquisition to my fledgling DVD collection. I would point out early on though that this review is of the Region One disc, labelled as 'Directors' cut'.The region two disc available here has few of the extra features of my beauty,so if you've got a multi region machine try and pick this up from DVDboxoffice.com where it'll cost you about £13.50 all in.The R2 disc has a yellow cover with only Vanessa Angel on whereas this has the whole motley trio on the box. The film is ...  Read the complete review

Maybe it's even too much for my crude sense of humour, lover of Farrely Brothers films that i am. See what you think. The story goes... Fresh young bowling champion Peter Munsen (Woody Harrelson) leaves small town to make it big in the state finals. Fresh young bowling champion meets sleazy con-artist bowler (Bill Murray) who offers him a chance to make some money. This results in him being without a bowling hand, literally. Seventeen(ish) years pass by and we see Munsen as a hard liquor drinker living in a dump with no attachments other than a really bad prosthetic rubber hand (this is not a sensitive film and isn't ashamed of ridiculing any ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Kingpin (DVD): Gross yet funny (826 words)

"Kingpin" follows a theme that is regularly highlighted in comedies, bowling. What with "The Big Lebowski" and...um..."Grease 2"? Okay, so I lied, there arent many hilarious films focused on bowling, and "Kingpin" isnt one of them, due to the fact that at most times it isnt "hilarious". It is however a half decent comedy that raises a few laughs from time to time. "Kingpin" centres on Roy Munsen (Woody Harrelson) who has been given the gift of bowling from a very early age. He grows up to become the 1979 bowling state champion, beating bitter fellow rival Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray), who exacts his ...  Read the complete review
