Disadvantages: Bit Disturbing in Places
Back in the late nineties, 1997 the internet informs me in fact, I went to see 'Kiss the Girls' at the cinema having somewhat enjoyed the James Patterson novel it was based on. This book isn't the first in the James Patterson 'Alex Cross' series but it was the first film to be made.
The story is all about Detective Alex Cross trying to foil a kidnap plan. And the reason he's even on the case is that his own niece is one of the missing girls. The serial killer is known as 'Casanova' and he abducts only the most brilliant of women. These poor women get locked up in an underground cellar (this happens very early on in the film) where Casanova has them all hidden.
As the film unfolds, we see Detective Alex Cross frantically trying to find his niece along with the other missing women who he believes have been abducted by the same person right from early on in the film. Only, then Detective Cross and his colleagues realise Casanova can't be alone. And that's where the film gets interesting.
Morgan Freeman plays a brilliant Detective Cross and is really well suited to the role. He's thoughtful, solemn and stand-offish, just like the Detective Cross in the book is. Ashley Judd plays one of the kidnapped girls excellently and really has you feeling for her during the more dramatic scenes. The rest of the cast were all pretty excellent too actually though they were the only really big names to feature. I found everyone worked together nicely to make this a really believable film.
It gets a little bit stomach churning in places I have to say but then I knew it would having read the original book. It's certified 18 and I agree with that as even some 16 year olds might find some of the scenes in this, especially the violent or sexual ones, a bit disturbing. These scenes are splattered throughout the film though and aren't the main point of the story at all. In fact they're necessary to drive home just how horrific what the serial killer is doing really is.
Since seeing this film at the cinema all those years ago, I've since bought the DVD plus I've seen it on television a few times. You can get it on DVD for a few pounds these days so for the price, if you've never seen this, you should get a copy. It's surprisingly well written for a James Patterson film! And Morgan Freeman is naturally excellent, as are the rest of the cast.
