Advantages: Good combination of Ledger & Bettany, amusing, engaging
Disadvantages: Plots a bit thin...
Recently watching and reviewing 'The Dark Knight' inspired me to make comment on Heath Ledger's other works, and being one of his early works, it's interesting to see how the actor has progressed.
A Knight's Tale tells the story of William Thatcher (Heath Ledger), a peasant squire who embarks on a journey toward knighthood after the untimely death of his master. The film is inspired by 'Canterbury Tales' and the story of 'Ulrich Von Liechtenstein', the film is a tale of love, adversity, success, and most importantly, jousting.
To start off with the bad; the plots a bit thin and it's embarassingly predictable. Some would cite the anachronisms in this film, such as modern music in a medieval film (Queen & David Bowie etc.), as a sin, but I think they work well and simultaneously make the film more light-hearted, but no less serious.
Th good? Heath Ledger is supported by the excellent Paul Bettany (Geoffrey Chaucer), and the relationship between the two is both amusing and serious; it's one of the best elements of the film.
Despite it's weaknesses, it still somehow succeeds at being a watchable and enjoyable production. If you haven't seen this film yet, get it, and watch it.
Summary: Good film, despite the historical inaccuracies...
