Advantages: Damsels, Jousting, Chivalry, Fun
Disadvantages: Predictable
I am always slightly dubious about films with medieval themes, so it was with some trepidation that I agreed to take the missus to see this Brian Helgeland film. What I found, to my pleasant suprise, was an entertaining and thoroughly gripping movie. Based several hundred years ago, when jousts and damsels were commonplace, the film centers around a young squire by the name of William Thatcher (Heath Ledger). He, along with his two fellow squires, panic when their Knight and Lord dies before an important joust. The money they would have received from this joust was too important for them to miss out on, so William poses as a Knight with the help of a young, naked, Geoff Chaucer. And so the tale unfolds - William meets Damsel, William meets arch-enemy, William holds grudge against arch-enemy and so on. The plot is predictable throughout, but its appeal does not lie in surprises or clever dialogue, but in pure entertainment. Make no mistake, this film is out there specifically to help you while away an evening. It has humour, romance, violence - all the ingredients for a great night out. The acting is brilliant. From Chaucer (Paul Bettany) to the ever amusing Wat (Alan Tudyk), the cast do their job well. The dialogue helps, leaving nothing to the imagination and helping the plot keep moving smoothly and at a reasonable pace. The music is fantastic too. It's not quite true to the period, but suits the whole atmosphere of the film very well. Besides, it is fun music, and that is essentially what this film is - fun. Overall, I would highly reccomend that if you haven't seen this yet, you check it out. It's a very light-hearted film, packed with gags and adventure alike.

- 22/03/02 I thought this film was great, I hired it to while away the night after being dumped. It cheered me up considerably! I thought the soundtrack was good too, different like Plunkett and McLeane's.
I was dubious when I saw the trailers though, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be funny!! |

- 24/10/01 Nice op, I actually like Robbie's versoin of We Are The Champions (not we will rock you), I saw him do it live and he was an excellent performer, although obviously no-one can beat the original! |
