Advantages: some funny bits
Disadvantages: disappointing
This week my film of choice was one that has just recently been released at the cinema, and that choice was ‘Knocked Up’. I had the idea this would be a light hearted funny film judging by the adverts I’d seen so I thought I’d give this a try. It’s a definite comedy but with an unusual kind of plot as judging by the title it involves pregnancy and is a bit of a mixture of a serious storyline with a bit of a silly one. I have to say I was a bit disappointed with this film as it in no way lived up to my expectations and I think as usual the advert had pretty much revealed most of the funny parts of the film and left me in my cinema chair with disappointment.
We start the film off by seeing the lives of two individuals. Firstly, we meet Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl), who lives with her sister and her sister’s husband and children, it’s a strange living arrangement but she sometimes looks after the kids. She has quite a good job working for E! the big entertainment network in the States and is usually behind the camera’s but as we watch on she is given a promotion and will now be in front of the camera doing the reporting and interviewing the stars so everything seems to be going well.
We then see the life of Ben Stone (Seth Rogen) he’s a bit of a bum hasn’t got much money has survived on money he had inherited for years and seems to do nothing with his life. He has no job and sits with his room mates who he shares a flat with taking drugs and living a stoner kind of life. He and his flatmates are trying to build a website which involves films which you can just skip right to the sex scenes to save viewing time, which of course only a film like this could come up with that idea. In other wards he’s a bit immature and has no real drive or direction.
One night Alison and her sister Debbie decide to go on a night out and they’re having a good time. Alison goes to the bar to get a drink then gets into conversation with Ben who is waiting to be served. He decides to buy her a drink and then his party and her and her sister all begin talking. Debbie has to go home as one of her kids is sick but Alison decides to stay as she is having fun. Of course then she begs Ben to come back to her place and they have a one night stand. After they have breakfast and then part their different ways but a few weeks later Alison starts getting morning sickness at work and it doesn’t dawn on her that she might be pregnant until a colleague suggests it then the panic begins.
The film begins with some funny parts and the sister’s children are funny and I had some hope for the film. However, as the film plods on we are given less of the comedy more boring conversations and the film no longer kept my interest. I think the problem with this film is the length it should have been cut down; no comedy should drag on to a two hour rolling time. Also, the film took too unrealistic a turn for me and this is what ruined it for me because a lot of the decisions here are just in no way what any one in the situation would do. Also the ending pretty much bored me as well, too predictable and not ideal for a film of this genre.
Katherine Heigl I haven’t seen in anything before, she was a pretty young face for the film and brightened up the camera. She was quite good in the part but I think her talent may have been wasted in this roll as it didn’t offer much of a challenge. She did the funny lines quite well though but I think her character annoyed me more than her acting as she probably did the best she could with it.
Seth Rogen is another new face for me I hadn’t seen him anything before but he was quite good. His character wasn’t very likeable to me a bit of a waste of space but I think he tried to make light of the character as best he could but the man’s no Oscar winner here and he’ll probably only be stuck doing comedies with his skill and looks.
Overall, I’d say ‘Knocked Up’ was a disappointment, it was funny at times but I’d say only watch it if you’re bored and are really willing to give the film a chance. Maybe if you’re pregnant yourself you may find this film quite funny, who knows but if didn’t appeal to me much.
The film I think might be still showing in some cinemas but its pretty much on the way out of one’s near me now. The film lasts approximately 129 minutes and is a UK 15 certificate. It can be purchased on DVD on region 1 on the 25th September priced at £15.99 on www.playusa.com . The official website is at http://www.knockedupmovie.com/ where you can view the trailer.

dlb74 - 16.09.07 Great op on a film that would be very topical for me right now...
There are loads of things on at the cinema right now that I'd like to see first and if what you say is anything to go by, I think I'll wait til it's out on DVD and rent it then!
