Advantages: Great up until the ending
Disadvantages: The ending
After seeing the trailers for knowing, I assumed it would be an action type race against time film.
To the most part I was right and the film delivers, up until the end that is.
Don't get me wrong Nicolas cage and the other members of the cast are good actors and it's not their acting that lets the film down.
The film starts with a young girl in 1949 at school, her class have been chosen to draw a picture each that will be placed within a time capsule then buried for 50 years for the children of the 2009 class to unearth and look at.
Everyone in the class draws robots and spaceships and their own view on what they think the future will be like, apart form the girl who writes numbers.
to cut a long story short the numbers are the lat and long co-ordinates of disasters that will happen in future, the date in which they will happen and also the number of people who will be killed in each disaster.
When the time capsule is unearthed each child of the present day class receives an envelope with one of the pictures drawing by the class of 1949.
Nicolas cage, who plays a professor of astrophysics at MIT stands by and watches his son receive an envelope.
That night after discovering by chance what the number mean, attempts to stop them, each time failing.
His son keeps hearing voices and seeing random men who seem to be stalking him. At one point he is playing on the front lawn and they arrive to give him a black smooth stone.
At the end of the piece of paper there is no number of victims to the last disaster, just the letters EE. This is later found out to mean everyone else, therefore meaning the end of the world.
Cage then using his intellect discovers that a solar flare from the sun will soon burn everything on the planet.
Up until this point in the film I was on the edge of my seat wondering what and how they can possibly avoid the fate of the planet. And then the blow was made aliens...
It always seems to be the case, a movie is brilliant all the way through and then just as if the writer cannot seem to think of an ending that can give a dramatic climax. If in doubt just say aliens come and take the children to safety.
It is by far the worst ending I have ever seen.
Not being the best at science etc and not really knowing much about solar flares. But if one did occur and it is so powerful to kill everything on the planet then why make a film about it. There could have been hundreds more disasters that could have been used, and to good effect which would give a good ending.
But aliens? It's as though they ran out of money at the end and asked a child to finish it for them.
Overall a great film up until the ending
Summary: Could be better
