Advantages: Good story

Disadvantages: child actors

Its been a long time since I've sat down and enjoyed a Nicholas Cage movie. Of late he seems to have been the worst dross ever committed to celluloid - 'Next' and 'Ghost Rider' spring to mind. In fact the last decent thing I've seen him in was 'Snake Eyes' - long gone of the days when he churned out action corkers like 'The Rock', 'Face Off' and 'Con Air' in quick succession.

Knowing is a real return to form for Cage. He's never been the most versatile of actors - amazingly winning best actor in the Oscars in 1995 - but here he plays the everyman pretty well. Here he plays a science professor at MIT who stumbles across an intriguing code.

Fifty years previously, a time capsule is buried in the grounds of a school with drawings of what children predict the future will be like. Most of the drawings are of spacemen and robots, but one little girl's drawing is a strange series of numbers. Fast-forward to the present and the time capsule is dug up and its drawings handed out to the school's new children. Of course, its Cage's partially deaf son who gets the weird numbers and its up to Dad to work out what they mean. It soon becomes apparent that the numbers are a code and pinpoint all of the major disasters in the past fifty years. However - there are several numbers that are yet to happen and its up to Cage to protect his family from the upcoming disasters.

It's a very clever film indeed and I was caught out by the 'out there' ending. The action set pieces are very well directed indeed - especially the New York City Underground train crash. The plane crash was also incredibly effective and pretty horrific when I saw it - very well made indeed.

I was a little annoyed by the child actors in this film, they never seem to be able to pick good ones who don't seem top have come straight out of the child actors guild. Cage is good as well and while not really pushing the boat fully out does a good job.

I heartily recommend Knowing especially if you are into sci-fi and action films. Its much more high brow than I was expecting from the trailer and it's a good couple of hours entertainment.

Available now from Play.com including postage for £11.99.

Summary: Surprisingly good sci-fi
