 ... rather more plot description than I would normally give, but it felt necessary to give a feel for the kind of film we're talking about. The 40s saw a lot of films like this - mad scientists sending apes out to do their evil bidding were a staple of Poverty Row horror movies, usually starring a down-on-his-luck Bela Lugosi. Konga is a rare British example, and late enough that everyone involved should have known better. This is inept enough that it could almost be an Ed Wood movie. It does contain one semi-star. A review of just the film. A region 1 DVD is available for about £10, and there's also a cheaper edition available, twinned with a film called Yongary Monster from the Deep. Producer Herman Cohen made a number of cheap horror movies in the 50s and 60s, including several in Britain, usually starring Michael Gough. Konga (1961) is one of the stranger ones - a sort of weird mash-up of King Kong, Little Shop of Horrors and any number of mad scientist movies featuring gorillas. It is absolutely wonderful.
