It's a scene of nearly 10 minutes, with woodwind keeping the atmosphere focused while the camera works some magic. Sweeping shots of nature ensure the realism, while the characters are shown as shallow from the get go.

It always surprises me when I realise that the vast majority of films don't actually do anything special - they just fill your head with wacky ideas, satisfy your expectations and give you a whole load of special effects to mask the shallow nature of the plot. Every now and then there is a film that defies all of this, reminding us that a lot of the elements that modern directors rely upon mask the real directive skill. L'Avventura is one of these films, a 1960 film from Michaelangelo Antonioni that explores human emotion and puts the power of the film firmly in the hands of a camera genius.
